Losing too fast?

I started dieting on Jan. 5. I have lost 13 pounds since then. I'm eating, I just stopped eating sugar. Isn't it bad to lose so much so quickly? I'm losing about a pound a day.

How much do you have to lose?
For me, if I was losing a pound a day that would mean I'm eating about 800 calories a day so yeah, that would be very bad for me.0 -
What is your height, weight, calorie intake, and activity level?0

Give us your stats0

I am 5'6". I started on the 5th at 228 lb and now I'm down to 215. I try to stay around 1200-1300 calories a day.0

If you are cutting carbs it could be mostly water weight that you've lost. It's just a guess, we need more info as stated above.0
-
I've not cut carbs, only sugar. I was drinking a lot of Mountain Dew and eating a lot of sweets.0

With your stats, you will be losing a decent amount of water weight right away. The loss should slow down. That being said, 1200-1300 is also on the low side for your height and weight.0

You have cut calories.0

I'm 5'6" and about 50lbs more than you set at a goal of losing 2lbs a week. My calories are at over 2200. Now, you certainly have to take in less than me to lose at a decent rate but I'm thinking you're a little low. What does the app say in respect to your stats and energy out put? Like others have said what you're probably experiencing is more water weight loss, which from experience DOES come off very quickly. Good luck in your journey!0

lucky you im 5'5 and 50 lbs heavier than you. for me to lose 2 lbs per week i get 1810. being short is so unfair0 -

I actually did 1850... after a brief time of cutting out too much at 1500. I'm surprised I'm losing right now because I was at that lower cal level. Then again I work at Amazon walking 13+ miles a day with gym after several times a week.
Don't worry, my cal limit will be down sooner than later. Haha0 -

Carbs are sugar0 -

Sugar itself is a pure carbohydrate, but I'm pretty sure you weren't just eating it plain, by the spoonful. It's generally found together with high carbohydrate starches, such as cakes, cookies, fast foods, Starbuck's lattes, etc., as well in those Mountain Dews. Just cutting out sugar means you're naturally cutting your carbs. Cutting carbs leads to water loss, even if you're not doing a low carb diet.
It's quite possible that such a large weight loss so quickly is primarily water weight. This means that eventually your body will adapt to your new lower level of carbohydrates and water retention will normalize. This can mean that you will stall (not lose anything for a while) or even gain a few pounds. Be prepared, don't let it discourage you, and stay on track.

It's water. You are NOT losing a significant amount of body mass. Continue what you are doing. Weigh and log all your food. If you cannot handle daily water fluctuations, weigh yourself only once a week.
If things don't settle down, contact a gypsy as you have been cursed and there is nothing MFP can do for you.0 -
You will most likely plateau soon. Try not to get frustrated when that happens. I have always lost the first portion quickly, as I have always cut out sweets and soda first. I also notice when I write everything down I am eating quite a bit less than I did when I wasn't watching my weight.0

I still eat bread, potatoes, etc. I stopped eating sugar.
Just so you know, most bread has sugar in it. And bread is just converted to glucose (sugar) anyway in your body, so you're kind of still eating sugar. Potatoes are a starch, which is also converted to sugar by the body. You might have meant that you're cutting added sugars.
There is an initial loss of water weight when limiting simple carbs. It's nothing to be alarmed about - it's just your body running through its glycogen stores in the muscles and liver, a process which eliminates water as well.0 -

***I completely understand that bread turns to sugar. I also think that everyone that read my post understood that I was cutting out things like ice cream, soda, cookies, candy, candy bars, cake, etc. I didn't think that I needed to list it all when I said that I was cutting out sugar. I knew that people could tell what I meant, especially after I clarified that I was not cutting out carbs. ***0 -

I got it. You mean you are not on a low carb diet. You probably have reduced carbs by cutting out some added sugar food and drinks, but you aren't in ketosis or anything,0 -
I've not cut ALL carbs, only sugar. I was drinking a lot of Mountain Dew and eating a lot of sweets.
edited for comprehension purposes.
Your weightloss is fairly common for your size & just starting, it will slow. Don't be discouraged, and I wouldn't weigh more than once a week...less if you can avoid it.

Haha wooow OP - I get you, you are NOT on a low carb diet, you are still eating grains and starches, you are cutting out sugar-laden processed foods and reducing your caloric intake - feel free to correct me if I'm wrong (we must be very careful with our words here!)
Well, great job with changing things up. Your weight loss does sound a bit fast but it will likely even out a bit soon. You could likely increase your calories a bit and continue to lose, may help your program become more sustainable.0 -
Embrace it!! You are ok. It will slow down and that is ok. Good work!
