Connecting fitness apps help and tips

Technology challenged here. I currently have an iPhone 5 with Human as a step counter and map my walk to record (walking) workouts. Both write to apples health app, only one somewhat writes to My Fitness Pal. Sometimes the whole mad mess triple counts activity... Not pretty, totally open to changing one or more of these apps. Is there a different combo of apps that might work better? Any tips for newbie trying to get workouts to sync automatically and generally trouble shooting? Please suggest free or cheap solutions only if recommending alternative apps.
