Can heavy lifting cause your hands to swell or feel tingly?

I lifted heavy and my hands hurt a little right after and were swollen..I put my lifting gloves on after and they felt like they barely fit. Does heavy lifting cause this or is it something else?

Yes. Gripping involves muscle to get "pumped" up and retain fluid temporarily.

It could. If you are holding massive amounts of weight in your hands , it can make them a little achey. And if you are holding massive amounts of weight and standing on your feet, like a squat or DL that could possibly irritate your feet because of the extra pressur/weight on them that they aren't used to. You have to go at it slowly and give your whole body a chance to catch up to your max weights.

Yup. Honestly, the most pain I get from doing something like deadlifts for example is actually in my hands.

Thanks everyone its probably from lifting. I lifted my 40 lb bike over and over and sometimes with 1 arm and I normally don't do arm weights and mostly legs. It's a new bike..not used to lifting it. Then walked after and it was swelling. They used to swell on hot days when I ran far and was dehydrated or something but not really sure the cause. It hasn't happened for a long time since I ran with a sports drink. This was the first time they felt tingly and sort of hurt and felt a little swollen. The day after, my arm muscles are sore from the lifting.

My hands are my weak spot, due to arthritis that set in prior to starting lifting. Lifting sure doesn't help it any. :(

I wore my weight training gloves before lifting my bike and no more tingling or swelling from lifting it!!

Yep happens to me alot. I've also started having some wrist issues. So now I wrap my wrists up pretty tight with hand wraps before I put on my lifting gloves just to give me a little extra support while pushing/pulling. I def struggle with grip strength on Dead Lifts too. My grip hasn't progressed as fast as the rest of my body. Alternating grip helps but I may have to invest in straps soon.
