What is net calories burned vs gross calories?

I know this is a stupid question but i read everywhere online net vs gross and i still dont understand! Could someone please explain to me what they mean?

Gross calories are the calories you ate, total. Net is your total calories minus exercise.0

It's like a paycheck - you get paid by the hour and earn money, that's your gross pay. Then taxes are taken out, and you're left with your net, or take home pay.
So the total cals you eat are your gross cals, minus the ones your burned in exercise, and the net is what's left, your "take home" cals.
