Can't seem to stay on track, gained back all the lost weight!

Hi everyone,

This is my third time on MFP. My first time (3 years ago) on MFP was a big success, I lost about 6kg and was motivated to make more healthy choices in my life.

Fast forward 3 years and I'm here looking miserable and depressed because I've gained back all the lost weight and keep hitting rock bottom whenever I try. I started bootcamp 2 months ago and now I seem to have lost motivation to keep going.

Sometimes I track my food and log it in MFP and sometimes I forget, I need someone to kick my butt and I just need the motivation to try again!!! And this time for good! Anyone else been in this situation before, would really like some advice please? :(

    Couple of things:

    First of all I understand COMPLETELY. Last year I had the most success I've ever had using MFP and lost over 30 pounds, but ended up gaining back all but about 10.

    Here's what's been helping me this year:

    1. I actually dropped my weight loss goal per week from 2lbs-1.5. I'd rather lose the weight slower and be able to stick to the whole thing easier than not lose at all, or worse, gain. I'll happily drop it down to 1 lb per week if I have to. Of course I'd like to lose more than that, but I'm hoping I can make up for it in the gym.

    2. I've been focusing a ton on fitness, but instead of thinking of it just in terms of how many calories I'm burning, I've tried to make it more about reaching new goals and breaking new barriers in the gym. This doesn't have to be crazy stuff. I've been working on both a couch to 5k program as well as strength training. A couple of weeks ago It seemed like a great goal for me to be able to work in a 10 minute warm-up on the eliptical trainer, a few resistance machines AND a 30 minute run/walk interval program, I hit that goal two weeks ago. Another goal I had was to complete my C25k program for the day, and then complete another 30 minute program I have on my phone called Zombies, Run! in the same workout, got that done as well. These little goals have helped me keep motivated to work out, and whenever I am able to complete something I wasn't able to before, it makes me feel empowered.

    3. If you haven't already, you may want to consider investing in an activity tracker. I personally use a Garmin Vivofit, but any tracker will work. Hitting those step goals every day will get you closer and closer to your fitness goals.

    Are you talking about only 6 kilos again? If yes, and this is your rock bottom, go stand in front of the mirror and keep repeating "I look great" :)
    In my experience, when it comes to managing that type of weight loss, you need to forget losing weight fast, and look at maintenance. What happens when you lose the weight? Does your lifestyle allow you to keep these few kilos off? If not, why? What can you change? Find for example some exercise routine or sport that is sustainable. For years to come. Not something intense until you lose the weight, but something you will actually want to do and look forward to doing on the long run. What can you change in your eating habits, again on the long run, to permanently lower your calories a little bit? More homemade meals? Find ways to cook with less calories per portion? Less snacks? Different snacks?
    Losing 6 kilos will happen after a few months or a year. And if you aim for slow, it will be easy. The hard part will be not gaining them back, so work with maintenance at a lower weight as your goal. It will not be something dramatic, so it will need some thought about what is sustainable and will make a difference.
