So I woke up this morning at 5 and was going to go to the gym to get my work out in before it gets to hot in the day and I don't want to leave the house. Then I remembered my gym isn't open at 5 on the weekends, but I did get in a workout after breakfast. My question is What do you guys eat as a "snack" when you work out this early in the morning. I am hungry when I get up and know I will need a little something to eat if a plan on doing a 5 or 6 am work out. Suggestions on the best nutrients for a workout first thing in the AM. Once I am done with my workout I will come home and have breakfast. Thank you

I am not an expert and I am not an early morning person. So, in a way I can relate because I could not eat breakfast this early. Snack on a banana - that's what I do if I have no time for anything more substantial to prepare for a workout. Just don't exercise on an empty stomach!

I try to get a little protein and carbs in meals and snacks. So maybe whole grain toast w/peanut butter?

I workout at 5:00 am every morning during the school year. I usually don't eat until I get home. I've never been a big morning eater. I only have 40 minutes to work out anyway.

Work out every morning at 5:00 am and if can't get breakfast in will get some typpe of protein if evn two tablesppons of peanut butter. Probably equally important is getting some protein in the body shortly after working out.....within 10-15 minutes.

I eat a normal breakfast before I go to the gym. Usually a fiber cereal, fruit, sausage etc then when I get home from the gym I eat an egg or have an egg sandwich.

    Atkins bars are good too

I don't need a snack, but why not try one of the following?

    Half a container of yogurt
    Some cottage cheese
    A small piece of cheese
    A small piece of fruit
    A small handful of nuts
    A small cup of coffee

Obviously, you don't want too much of a feeling of fullness if you're going to be bouncing up and down doing cardio.

I am not a real person without a shower or a coffee. Since I don't shower before my morning workouts, a coffee and a yogurt is essential for me being able to put in any effort at all. Then after my workout I eat a real breakfast (usually a bagel and lox). I know a lot of my friends eat something like a hard boiled egg or a granola bar prior to workouts. Hubby eats a banana or some dried fruit. Eat a snack! The way I see it, you need energy to workout and concentrate of proper form.

Actually, I don't think it matters.

I get to the gym at about 4:45 every morning and also wake up hungry. Before I go I eat a half a banana and 3 egg whites, scrambled and cooked with cooking spray, with a tablespoon of low fat shredded cheese. It's just over 100 calories and enough to get me through my workout without making me feel overly full. After my workout I eat a normal 300-350 calorie breakfast - sometimes a yogurt parfait that I make or a homemade egg/English muffin sandwich.

I workout in the morning. Usually at around 5 am. I do not like eating before workout as it makes me sick. I always wait until am done to eat a high protein breakfast.
  • Try having some avocado slices!

    >slice of toast with peanut butter
    >oatmeal with protein powder
    >1 egg or 2 egg whites on half a pita bread or slice of toast
    >Yogurt

Make double batch of Original natural Quaker Oatmeal (5 minute time to cook one), saves time.

Eat some protein before workout and get some protein in within 15-30 minutes post-workout.
(Bring a bottle beverage with protein powder in it to sip on way home)

Hi! I'm a part of a 5am club and my mornings usually go like this

    4:00 get up, shower

4:15 make coffee, bum around getting everything ready for work and make my morning shake which I dont drink until after the gym (I drink decaf coffee)
Sometimes I might eat something small like a piece of toast if I feel like it, but not usually, if I do eat its something small

    5am arrive at gym, workout

6am leave gym, I drink the protein shake which I make in my magic bullet, I drink it while I drive to work.

My shake is usually protein powder almond milk and ice. sometimes I add half a banana or some frozen berries but most mornings I make it a chocolate-coffee shake with a little bit of instant coffee and chocolate protein

Oatmeal n fruit. or Yogurt n fruit. An apple.
Carbs are important before workout for energy.
If you are Only doing Low intensity cardio, you may burn a bit more fat on an empty stomach.
Protein within the hour after/during, for rebuilding muscle tissue.

If I am doing cardio, nothing, unless I'm planning on 10 miles or more, than some berries or yogurt, or yogurt with berries.

If I am doing strength training, a banana or yogurt.

I also go to the gym at 5am.

I am NOT naturally a morning person. I started going to the gym this year at 5am because that is the only time I can get there. So I get up at 4:40am, go to the toilet, brush my teeth, get dressed in the clothes that I put out the night before, grab my bag and leave. I'm there at 5am. I mostly do weights. I leave at about 6:15am.

There's no way that I could eat in that time before the gym, and I don't think I need to. Maybe I would perform better with some food, I don't know - but I don't have the time beforehand. When I get home, I have a shower and get ready for work and then I eat my breakfast at about 7am. Some days I'm starving, others not so much. I'm probably just used to this routine.

If I was going to eat that early, I'd want to have something ready that I could just grab and go. So my ideas would be:

    - boiled egg
    - banana
    - protein shake

High five to anyone who goes to the gym at 5am!! I think it fits in well, because then no matter what happens during the day, I know that I have done my workout and feel energised and motivated through the day. Power to us!
