Has anyone here ever eaten Russel Stovers sugar free chocolates? They all seem to contain Malitol syrup as an ingredient. Or sorbitol
Has anyone experienced diarrhea after? I'm pretty sure that's the cause, because I didn't eat anything else different yesterday that may cause this.

Maltitol is a laxative. Some products containing maltitol have warnings about serving sizes that are considered safe.

Well, that explains this morning. Another 'diabetic' product to scratch off my list.

Pretty sure on all those types of sugar free candy/ice cream/similar there is a warning of excess consumption may result in laxative effect

I don't know where you come from @judyvalentine512 so excuse me if you're already aware but Diabetes Research UK do not advocate 'diabetic' products due to the sweeteners and general rubbish they put in them which commonly give people upset stomachs, God knows what else it may be doing. They are trying to get diabetic products banned stating that moderation is the key. If you want a decent sugar free chocolate you're better off eating 100% cocoa chocolate. You need to become accustomed to it as it's not chocolate as you know it taste wise but you need very little to satisfy the cocoa beast inside and it has many further health benefits (in moderation ;) )

Many people who state that they are addicted to chocolate aren't - they are in fact addicted to the sugar which companies tend to use to bulk out the chocolate bar. Remember sugar is cheap, cocoa isn't!

    Good luck :)

Limiting sugar alcohols to 20 grams a day is usually suggested to avoid these issues.

Faramelee, thanks for that. it actually helps explain a few things, stomach wise. Just to tell ya, a friend told me about what she calls the " dark chocolate solution" to help me get over chocolate. So, I bought a chocolate bar that was 90% cocoa. It still didn't satisfy the beast. No worries though, I'll keep searching, or just try this new thing. Moderation

@judyvalentine512 Those sugar alcohols do it every time. If you haven't looked up the comments on Amazon for Haribo sugar free gummy bears, do so now.

Sorbitol is the devil. I had one serving of something with it and omg omg it was horrible. I have Crohn's so that made the situation worse

I am not sure if this label contains the warning or not, but usually when sugar alchols are added it will say it causes laxative affect.

Sensitivity or eating too much can cause this. Not experienced it thoough.

I have never liked gummy bears or anything gummy. I don't like the texture.

How many did you have? I remember a Valentine's Day a few years ago where I ate 3-3.5 servings of those things in an afternoon/evening... and then spend the rest of the night with killer diarrhea. Now, I only eat a serving at the very most (most of the time the serving size is "3 pieces", and I only take one), unless I am willing to become best friends with the nearest toilet.
  • Haha sorry but yes, the Harbo Gummy Bear effect is what you've experienced. Click on the Amazon link, it's hilarious.

i just don't understand why the reviews have so many stars but when you read them, they shouldn't be that high. I just go regular gummies :)

Oh boy. I remember way back when I tried the Adkins diet. I have a major sweet tooth, so this doesn't work well for me. I ate so many of those sugar free candies that it did indeed give me the runs.

The Xylitol in sugar free gum and candy kills dogs. Use it all you want, keep away from Fido.

Sounds like most things with "-ol" at the end of the word should be something I should be avoiding at all cost. I have got to start listing these things down. :D

Malitol, sorbitol, xylitol, Pepto-Bismol, ALCOHOL... phenobarbital. Wait, that last one ends with an "-al," thus it should be ok then.

Lemme go grab some vintage Nike running shoes, a blanket, some grape juice, and some track pants. :D

I tried sugar-free lollies once a few years ago. Once only. Unpleasantness ensued.

One time when I was a child I saw my dad had special candy hidden in the pantry. I love candy ! Especially chocolates!

I waited until he left and ate the entire box. It was Russell stover sugar free chocolate.

I learned my lesson that day !!! Diarrhea for three days and stomach cramping! Lol !!

So since then I stay away from the sugar free candies ! Lol !!!

Someone at my vet also said this . I have no idea if it was true or not. Luckily I don't keep the sugar free candies in my house ( due to explosive diarrhea )

It's true. I know someone who almost lost their dog. They saved the dog but then had a $2500 vet bill!
