Educate me about rest days...

I read on someone's post that gains are made while resting and that it takes more discipline to rest sometimes.
My schedule is as follows:
Monday: golf 9 holes & tennis 45-60 mins
Tuesday: golf 9 holes & weight training
Wednesday: golf 9 holes & walking treadmill
Thursday: walking treadmill & weight training
Friday: yoga , tennis & volleyball
Saturday: walking treadmill & personal training
Sunday: walking treadmill
So. I suppose if I need to rest it would be on Sunday. I just go for a walk on the treadmill because it's become a habit to move in some way everyday. But then it got me thinking - do I "need" a rest day?
Please someone explain to me what this resting thing is about, and if I should take one and why?

I think the idea is to take a rest day after working out a certain set of muscles.
Your schedule is a wonderful combination of cross-training, so unless you're feeling very run-down or sore, keep up the good work!
It doesn't matter if you walk every day. We were built to do a lot of walking.0
