Reality Check

I don't know how to say this without sounding snotty, so I'm just going to say it. In the last few days I've spoken to a few people (3) about how I'm trying to become healthy as it's come up in normal conversation. I've mentioned that I've lost about 10 pounds and am looking to lose about 60 more. For some reasons, I always expect them to say... "What??? 60 pounds? Are you crazy??? You don't need to lose 60 pounds." Not a single person did. I found it a little disheartening, because although I know I'm fat, I've always had a hard time picturing myself as obese. Well... Guess what?? I am.

On a positive note, this has only served as motivation to stay the course and keep doing what I'm doing. I'm proud of my accomplishments so far and plan to keep on going until I am proud of the final outcome.

I know that when I was heavier, I didn't think of myself as heavy most days. Yes, I knew that I was but I didn't really have bad experiences/reactions from people the way many others seem to so it wasn't something that I thought about too much. Once I started losing weight, I thought about it way more than ever. In fact, one of the things I haven't liked about losing weight is how conscious I've become of how I look. Don't take that as discouragement though! It's just my experience. Anyway, best of luck to you!

@jemhh - Thank you. I don't take it as discouragement at all. I appreciate your kind words.

For me, it took a similar slap of reality to do something about how I was.

I saw a photo and didn't recognise myself - it was like me, but, well, bigger. I'm now at a weight that I used to think was particularly fat. It's taken 3 months of effort for me to get to a point that I was disappointed in myself a few years ago (if that makes sense?).

But, the penny dropped, finally and I'm now in this for the long term. I have changed my eating and created new habits - these habits need to stick and MFP is a great tool for ensuring that I don't have a gradual slide back into weight gain.

@cpw2109 - It's excellent that you're making the long term change. I'm trying too. You know the old quote-- "I wish I was as fat as I thought I was 10 years ago." You're description made me think of that. Keep up the great work.
