Does the green check next to food choices mean that it's a verified entry?

Yes, but don't rely on it. Verified just means that a certain number of users agree that it's correct. There are some pretty wacky verified entries in the database. It's always best to double-check when you're looking for a new food.

Yes, but just because it's verified doesn't mean that it's accurate. There's some verified entries that are outdated (especially with foods that might have had a formula change after entries became verified on MFP).

Buy yourself a calorimeter and calculate the exact energy in your food.

You can't if you're just going by MFP's broken system. You have to independently verify it through non MFP sources.

How can one tells what's most accurate?

This is what I do .. with all new foods

I search for it - pick the most appropriate looking one that has a calories by gram option in the drop down, then I google search nutritional information and double check

If I'm happy and select it it ends up in my frequent or recent lists and next time I use it I log through an app so I can select those easily

If it's a packaged food I scan the barcode on my app - then double check against package and same thing

the big green tick is irrelevant

PS I never use other people's recipes or meals or homemade entries because I always adjust my own recipes

Basically what I do as well. I search the USDA website for whatever it is I'm looking for. Some of those MFP entries are way, way off.
