Sodium content

As a new member, I have been checking the nutritional content of my food and found many instances where members have added items but with a totally incorrect sodium content. Many appeared to be fooled by the need to add sodium in mgs (milligrams) on this site but food packaging often shows it in g (grams). When adding items, the amount in grams need to be multiplied by 1000 to arrive at the correct amount of salt to be entered. This obviously makes a huge difference to peoples dietary totals. Has anyone else noticed this? I no longer take any member added item without double checking and amending the nutritional amounts where possible.

yes, noticed that. Don't track sodium so not really bothered but the accuracy of data is indeed something to keep an eye on. As well as grams vs mg some labelling reports it as salt not sodium adding further confusion.0

There are a lot of things that are entered incorrectly, and not just sodium. Fortunately I have noticed that now mfp has a feature where there is a green check mark next to an item that has been verified and is correct in its nutritional content. If you search an item and get multiple similar results, choose the one withthe check.0

The checkmark just means that multiple users have said it is accurate. It isn't a guarantee of accuracy. There are multiple instances of verified entries being wrong, unfortunately.
While these entries may be more accurate than the average database entry, you will still want to double-check them.0 -

Thanks for the info! I didnt realize that0 -
Thanks for the advice everyone. I suppose the answer is just to double-check all items. Like Hope228, I also have high-blood pressure so sodium content is of particular concern, especially when someone has entered 1 and it should read 1000. A significant difference!!0

I hadn't noticed sodium being off that much so thanks for the heads up as I need to monitor mine. Many DB entries are bogus, I found 800 calorie garlic clove last week!0
