Hello everyone. I am fairly new to MyFitnessPal. I am a large guy was weighing at 380lb. I have currently lost 16lbs using this app.
I work a sales job and I work retail hours. I sometimes don't get home til 830pm sometimes later. I was curious what types of foods should I be eating after work if I haven't had time for dinner while working???
Thank you

It doesn't matter. As long as you're staying within your calories, just eat what you want.0

Really. So if my calories intake is around 1600 a day and I'm at 1100. It doesn't matter the time when I can stuff 500 calories in my face0

Basically ^
I eat whatever I want, whenever I want, as long as I'm in my goal limit.0 -

Yep, that's right. Meal timing is just personal preference; eat when you're hungry.0 -

It makes no difference when you eat or what you eat. You are tracking and its working. Good job so far......keep it up.0 -

I know I'm late to this party, but yeah, just to agree with all the above posters - eating time only matters in terms of personal preference (and eating at appropriate times to fuel a workout, I suppose). I typically eat dinner at 9ish and have a bedtime snack after that, and that's usually something like 900 calories. Hasn't hindered my loss anyway.0 -
I eat right before bed. Has not hindered me. Have lost 50+ in the 2 yrs I've been logging consistently.0

Doesn't matter. Though I do hope you are eating more than 1600 calories. As a 5'4" 130 lb female that's how much I eat to lose.0 -
Yep four nights a week I work from 4-8 so I come home, put my kids to bed, and eat dinner around 9. I usually have enough calories left to have dinner and a snack on those nights. Hasn't hindered my weight loss, I'm down about 80 pounds.0

I would recommend eating something that is lean protein. It will kick start your body to work for the night. I tend to eat about 2 cups of chicken or a can of tuna with spinach or spring mix. I don't recommend eating anything too high in fat or calories because it could effect your weight loss results!!!0

Yup, doesn't matter. As long as you're getting all your calories and nutrients, eat when you want, when it's convenient to you.0

This is not true. If you're in a deficit, you're in a deficit. I could consume my fat goal for the day in one sitting before bed and still lose weight.0 -

No it won't. It doesn't matter what time you eat. Just stick to your calorie goal and you'll be fine.0 -

Completely your personal preference when you eat your calories. Personally I can't eat after 8pm or I have trouble sleeping, but I know plenty of people eat later than that.0

Awesome stuff guys. Thanks0

I mean, it might be more pleasant to eat at a moderate pace, but yes, mean timing is irrelevant to weight loss. You can eat whatever you like as long as you maintain a calorie deficit.0 -
I am just passing on what has worked for me. I am not in any way saying this is based in fact, but I have been able to lose weight and move forward in my weight loss goal by sticking to lean proteins and avoiding fats and carbs after 8 pm (or about 2 hours before bedtime). I am not a scientist and what works for me may not work for other people, but I am simply trying to help others with what has worked for me and I don't think it is necessary to jump on me and degrade me because I am sharing what has been effective for me in my journey.0

You didn't just share though, you recommended and proffered the information as though it were fact. "Hey this thing worked for me" and "you need to do this thing in order for your weight loss to work" are very different things.
I am glad it worked for you, and I agree that protein intake before work is probably a good idea, it sure made my job easier. If you don't want people to "jump" on you for sharing your experience, consider adding the caveat that it was your personal experience so it is not confused as a recommendation outside of known fact/MFP methodology.0 -

It doesn't work that way. Protein doesn't kick start anything. Your body is always working and your metabolism is always cranking at operational levels. You don't kick start what hasn't stopped or slowed.
The only thing that could affect you weight loss results is eating more calories than your goal overall. Whether you have fats or calorie dense foods before bed makes no difference whatsoever.I am just passing on what has worked for me. You stated, as a fact, that protein will kick start your body and that fat will affect weight loss. Both these assertions are incorrect. Why assert them?
No one has degraded you. Folks have simply pointed out that the claims you made about fats and protein at night are incorrect.
The rebuttals to your claims were given quite politely, in fact.
I'm glad you've had success. But I assure you that your success is due to an overall calorie deficit and not due to avoiding fat and carbs before bed.0 -
My experience working nights had me home at 8ish in the am and leaving for work at 10ish my then SO was working days so I would sleep my schedule on days getting between 3 and 4 woe be tide any who woke me before then. But if I was transitioning to off days I would stay up till noonish after getting off take a nap alarm set for 3:15 after I laid down, then spend the afternoon with him or whatever but my off days would be spent napping at odd times when most everyone was out usually and they got my afternoons. I had specific times I ate 7-8 pm midnight -1 and 4-5 with a light snack at 7 am, if one of these times was missed I'd eat a bit more at the next slot I was awake for.0

I eat dinner and immediately go to bed. Have been for years. Lost over 150 pound last year doing it.0
