Protein powder sources......whey? Hemp? Rice?

I need to get more protein in my diet. I know it's best to get it from whole foods, but I don't eat much meat except chicken or turkey, and I don't care for seafood. I've tried several types of protein powders, but I really don't like them so far. Mixing them with water tastes horrible, so I use So Delicious Coconut Milk as my base. I don't eat dairy, except for hard aged cheeses and an occasional Greek yogurt.

I started out with Whey protein, many flavors. So far, whey is the best tasting and mixes pretty well, but gives me nausea and bloating.

Hemp protien is too gritty, and tastes like the soil it was grown in.

Brown rice and sprouted rice protein aren't too bad. A bit gritty, but the protein content per serving is half that of the whey protein. Doubling up the scoops produces a mixture similar to concrete in taste and texture.

Soy is out. I only eat fermented soy like tofu.

Haven't tried egg or pea protein yet.

Any advice on what to try next? I'm looking for a creamy taste, high protein content that is not gritty and doesn't cause stomach distress.

If you're looking to put it in with drinks, egg probably isn't the way to go (I've heard a lot of people say they don't like the taste as a drink but to each their own I guess). I agree with the hemp protein...it tastes like soil to me...that is exactly the words I've used before. I can't remember what pea protein was like but I thought it was similar.

Whey isolate seems to get the best reviews as far as taste and creamy goes. Pees and egg protein aren't exactly creamy lol. what kind did you have? Isolate concentrate or a mix? I heard the isolates are easier on the stomach.

Oooh, watching this thread! I'm lactose intolerant (sounds like you may be, too) so the whey is out. I've been using (and love) Spirutein, but it's a bit expensive and kind of high on sugar and sodium (no wonder it tastes good). I ordered a pound of hemp/rice from TrueNutrition.com, but it's very gritty. Still hoping to find "the one"...

I know a few lactose intolerant people who drink whey. Whey isolate though, which is for the most part lactose free (something like 99.something percent?).

"Whey isolates yield a higher percentage of pure protein and can be filtered enough to be virtually lactose free, carbohydrate free, fat free, and cholesterol free."

I've tried GNC and Optimum Nutrition. Both are blends of whey and whey isolates.

I'd suggest the isolates, they're easier on the stomach for a lot of people (since there's no lactose I guess?)

I personally use both hemp, and whey, depends which I'm in the mood for. Ultimately, it will come down to what you like, and really what you add the protein powder to. Right now I'm totally addicted to 3 scoops of Nutiva Hemp Protein Shake mixed w/ 1/2 cup of Greek Gods Honey Yogurt! It's like chocolate frosting...so good!

I believe whey protein isolate in a medical grade ( google UNJURY). Is the best. I have been using this for 3 years. Also get a really good blender I use a VITAMIX. Blend product well using ice to keep it cold while mixing. Heat clumps all protein

i really like the brown rice protein powders by Vega. They are really smooth and don't taste too "vegan." Sunwarrior is also a good brown rice option.
