ANOTHER pedometer enquiry!!

Thought I'd do 30/40 minutes walking tonight just twice around our block. Took the ped off at the end and it said I'd walked 4578 steps, 2.167 miles and burnt 124 calories. Now I use the treadmill 4/5 days a week and a 40 minute walk at the same pace as I walked tonight burns 480 calories (720 per hour)
Now a few of you have told me to deduct 100 calories from the treadmill reading which I do for MFP purposes. My question is how can there be such a difference between 124 and 480? Granted I have the incline on level gradient 5 but it can't make that much difference surely?
Going outta my mind here if anyone can help I'd be grateful.
