Weight lifting plateau

I started working out about 2 years ago. After about 6 months, I plateaued on virtually every machine --- I could not continue adding weight.
This spring I got sick and was unable to work out for about 4 months so I lost quite a bit of muscle. The last couple months I've been able to work my way back up. However, I have now plateaued again at the same weight as the last time.
Is it normal for the human body (on an individual basis) to only be able to lift so much? Or should muscle growth continue?
I also do about 5 hours of cardio a week if that makes any difference.

You should try periodizing your routine. That means, in a simple sense, regularly cycling through different intensities and sometimes routines. In other words, lift lighter weights for 2 weeks, medium weights 2 weeks, heavy weights for 2 weeks and periodically mix in some different exercises.0
