Is losing inches and not pounds a real thing?

Technically the scale will only go down if you're losing and only losing mass will lower the scale - assuming properly working scale and equal gravity.
Losing size without losing weight is gaining density. What probably is going on is fat loss with water retention. Water is denser than fat. Eventually the body will have to let go of the water too and then weight goes down.0
