    Free weights.

    Every time, especially if you are just starting out.

    Machines have their place, but they shouldn't be the foundation of your program. The foundation of any solid program is going to be compound movements using free weights. Machines are great for some assistance work and isolation movements...assistance and isolation movements should not be the foundation of your program.
