At what point is there too much soreness to workout?

I started the 30 day shred yesterday and today I'm having difficulty walking. My left calf is extremely sore. I have full range of motion when I twist it around but walking down stairs is difficult, as well as getting up from a sitting position.
I see a lot of conflicting information on exercising sore muscles. Some say to work though it and deal with the pain, others say it needs to rest.
So my question is, how sore is too sore to exercise?

What I usually do is start working out, slowly and with the intention of warming up. If the soreness starts going away, then everything's fine and I keep working out. I will work through some pain and soreness, but if warming up doesn't help or makes it worse, I rest whatever is hurting. That doesn't mean I stop exercising, I just do something else.
In your case, if only one calf is sore, and you worked both of them, you may have some slight injury that goes beyond regular muscle soreness. Perhaps you jumped funny, landed wrong, whatever. Listen to your body, but don't give up on working out either.0
