Crutches as a workout?

Recently I sprained my ankle and will be on crutches for a little while. I didn't realize how much harder it would be walking with them until I'm out of breath after 2-3 minutes of use. Would it be safe to keep using them as a workout tool even when you don't need them? It wouldn't be all the time of course because the posture could suffer. Thanks in advance.

Safe in what way? People do use crutches long term so I don't imagine there is anything inherently unsafe about them if used properly.0

What would your goal be? To be better with crutches? There are probably better ways to build cardiovascular and upper body endurance.

I realize now that the crutches would get easier as you get used to them and the strength and cardio would not be optimal compared to first using them. I didn't think about my question long term. Thanks for the feedback though.0
