You may not find acerola cherries in the local market, but they're worth combing the health food stores for. These cherrylike fruits are the richest known natural source of vitamin C in supplements. Offering a wide variety of minerals and antioxidant, acerola cherries are one of the healthiest foods for pregnancy

* Your skin may be affected by acne thanks to your higher hormone levels during pregnancy. What causes acne, anyway? When dirt, oil or bacteria clogs a pore in your skin, your body response with an inflammatory reaction to try to clear the area of infection. Inflammation in your skin is what causes the red, puffy appearance of pimples.

* Vitamin C is an antioxidant that protects your skin from damage from free radicals. Free radicals form in your skin when it is exposed to sunlight, chemicals in cosmetics, and inflammation.

* Eating foods that contain vitamin C, like acerola cherries, may help protect your skin from free radical damage caused by acne inflammation.

* Your skin needs vitamin C to make collagen, one of the two main structural compounds that make it strong and elastic.

* Acerola cherries typically contain about 1,500 mg of vitamin C per gram, and they can contain much more, up to 4,000 mg. By comparison, a navel orange contains just 60 mg of vitamin C per 100 g, making acerola cherries the king of vitamin C-containing fruits.

In Southern California, bushy acerola cherry trees produce multiple crops from March through December. So I can enjoy the bright red, cherry-shaped fruits fresh almost year-round. They're also grown in South Texas and other hot-climate areas, as well as in Mexico and Puerto Rice). My favorite variety. Manoa Sweet, produces big, 1-inch bright red "cherries". I love the sweettart flavor of the fresh fruit. If you're lucky enough tto find fresh acerola cherries, just remember that they may look like cherries, but they have their own texture and flavor (not to mention three hard, dark seeds). So enjoy them for what they are, not what they're named for!
