What is your variation in pounds throught the day?

I am feeling pretty gutted. I have just taken arrival of Ozeri Precision II Digital Bathroom Scale. Prior to this I have been using the Wii once a week as I couldn't find our ancient mechanical scale. I was horrified to find despite my continued efforts this last week, I am 2.5 lbs more than last week. I know all about variations about time of the day, the difference if having a 'poo', water in the body and so on. This is the first time though I have seen a significance difference when actually trying hard to lose weight. I normally weigh myself Monday morning and the only reason I did so was to check it was working. Because of this I presumed that the Wii was inaccurate. So out came the Wii board and the test and the Wii weight came out pretty much the same.

While I do tend to go by the fit of my clothes it has still been a bit upsetting; hence asking out of interest: what are your variables? Be it if you are the kind of person who weighs yourself a couple of times a day, or once a week but at different times? I am still going to do my Monday morning weigh-in as normal so it will be interesting to see.

If you weigh yourself on 3 different sets of scales you will most likely get 3 different weights.

If you have new scales then weigh yourself tomorrow morning to get your new weight.

And I only ever weigh in the morning as I would fully expect to weigh more later in the day so it's pointless

If you're using different scales, you aren't going to get the same weight...scales are all calibrated a little differently..you should use the same scale.

If you're weighing yourself throughout the day, you're also weighing anything you've ingested as well as the associated waste bi-product.

Beyond that, you're always going to have naturally occurring weight fluctuations...body weight isn't static...nobody weighs exactly XXX Lbs. Your body weight is a range of weight and weight management, whether the goal is to lose, maintain, or gain is about watching the general trend over time...like weeks and months.

Scales vary. Humidity causes scales to vary. Surface under the scale can cause the scale to vary.

Water retention throughout the day can cause the scale to vary. Food consumption, waste removal, can cause the scale to vary.

Weighing yourself throughout the day is torture.

I can vary 10 lbs in the same day EASILY.

Weigh yourself weekly, at the same time, and save yourself loads of PAIN

(BTW: I weigh myself twice a day, when I first wake up, and 3 hours later, I normally vary 2 lbs lighter on the second weigh in :)

I can vary between 2 and 6lbs, depending on how much water/fluids I drink (always remember what my Dad used to say, "Pint of Water, A Pound and a Quarter"), it's pretty accurate.

Weigh yourself on the same scales and at the same time of the day, once a week (first thing in the morning is best) and don't worry about what happens throughout the day, it'll only make you paranoid.

Your new scale is obviously different than the one you were using before. No surprise there. Use the weight from your new scale as your actual weight, and only weigh yourself on that scale from now on.

It's only 2.5 lbs. Take the hit and move on.

But to answer your question: my weight varies by 2-3 lbs throughout the day. But I'm always stepping on the same scale.

Throughout the day? I think I'm about 2-3lbs heavier by bedtime but I'm not a multiple times a day weigher, did it out of curiosity once, heh. But generally, I can fluctuate up to 4-5lbs and I'll only weigh my lowest about once a week and that varies too. I am only just back to my lowest recorded weight since Christmas despite knowing I can't have gained much (other mitigating factors, exercise increase/change, cortisol etc), the body just does what it does.

So don't be despondent, weigh at the same time every day, take your new weight and move on.

I don't pay attention to fluctuations within a 24 hour period. I mean, why? I don't care about the minute by minute fluctuations or the day to day fluctations. I only focus on the trend because that is the only true indicator of weight loss or gain.

If I hop on the scales before bed I'm usually a good 3 lbs heavier than my morning weight.

I don't usually weigh after the morning, but I've "gained" as much as 5 pounds from one morning to the next, and you can be sure I didn't eat 17500 calories over maintenance in between. (It was water weight, gone in a couple of days.) Two to three pounds from one day to the next is totally common, and I'm sure the potential variation within a day would be even higher.

At a guess, I'll bet 5 pounds from AM (fasted, dehydrated) weight to peak daily weight would be very normal for me. A good sized glass of water can weigh around a pound, and I drink a bunch of them, not to mention the food effects!

I weigh once a day. But I'm sure I weigh 2 pounds more as soon as I drink my morning 32 oz of water.

I have two scales and they are exactly 1.8 to 2 pounds off. One is a dial scale and the other one is digital. The dial scale is a bit old, but still works.

WIth that said, never ever do I weigh during the day. To me that would put me into some sort compulsive behavior and I want to avoid that.

it will always fluctuate however just weigh yourself on same scale same time of day and then it won't be an issue also weighing yourself everyday is not a good idea

I only weigh myself in the morning. There's no point in weighing yourself more than that... I could have a 200g piece of cake at 800 calories or 500g of veggies at 200 calories plus 3 big glasses of water, guess what will make me weigh more on the scale?

    Pointless...

Wow! I didn't expect so many replies. Thank you everyone. Can I clarify I don't have any other scales: I said this on my original post - that I couldn't find my old mechanical scales so I had been weighing in every Monday at the same time on the Wii Fit balance board. I have always been a once a week gal regarding weighing as I think you can get paranoid weighing every day. A friend of mine who isn't overweight does weigh every day as it is something she has always done. She goes along with an article she read that stated if you weigh yourself every day you can track changes better and look for patterns on how you are eating, drinking and exercising etc. The reassuring thing from all of your comments is that it seems my 2.5lb variation is nothing compared to some of you. This morning I weighed myself again and I have dropped by a pound which is acceptable. Also as muscle is heavier than fat and water, I am putting down a slight toning up down to that. I will be deciding where to place the scales to leave them in the one place, but I do feel a lot happier about things this morning. Many thanks to all for replying.

I weigh once a day, at the same time of day, under the same conditions. I do that because I like observing the fluctuations.

But I do not weigh myself throughout the day ... there's no point in doing that.

Don't weigh yourself multiple times a day. You will just feel bad. Don't even weigh yourself once a day if small fluctuations bother you. Pick a set time of the day, probably morning, once a week, and don't stress so much.
