Maintaining muscle while losing weight?

What would be a good way for me to avoid losing much muscle while losing weight?

I have been inactive. Now, I am walking about 20 minutes everyday.

I don't belong to a gym. I could later but I would like to start with things I can do on my own.

Something that I can start slowly and add more in time.
