Home temptations/a non dieting partner

A couple of things. First, how about ordering some grilled pieces of chicken in your KFC bucket. Not perfect but many less calories than the breaded and deep-fried. Special K has some 100 calorie snack packs - keep some of those around the house and eat them when the junk snacks come out. Most of all remember this is not a diet, but a change to a healthy lifestyle.0

Banish those snack foods from the house. If you SO is determined to have snacks, tell him to store them in his desk or something so they're not right there when you're hungry. Or his car even. Somewhere that you don't see and takes effort for you to get to. It doesn't have to be forever, just until you can even out your daily calories so you don't get hungry and reach for them.
Also, try adjusting your calories to allow for extra in the evening. Find foods that you like that you can snack on and have those available. I won't say go eat carrots or something because not everyone likes veggies. I certainly don't, carrots are part of a meal, not something I want to snack on! But I can make some popcorn or something similar that satisfies my craving for salt but isn't a huge calorie sink. I make sure my calories in my day will account for that and eat accordingly. Having to make something and not have something ready also helps block my habit snacking, which is something I still have issues with.0 -
A husband that's never watched his weight 3 children 16,12,9
There's loads temptations I do all the meals no one else cooks as I see it the scales will reflect my eating and that depresses me so I have a treat a day I see this as a life style change so will eat what I like then get back on it taken me 28 years to get my head into yoyoing is demoralising & lifes to short to be food anal0 -
pre-logging my day has been a hugely useful tip for me. I sit down for 10 minutes in the morning, drink my coffee and pre-log what I intend to eat for the day. Play around with amounts and portions until I get it the way I want it, then I stick to the plan (more or less; I don't kill myself if something unexpected happens and the plan changes). Having a guideline, even if I end up changing something, helps me maintain focus and keep on track.
I second this!0 -
You know, I didn't know you could even get grilled chicken at KFC! I think the thing that gets me the most on junk is that, truthfully, I never had McDs or KFC or Burger King til I met my SO, who opened my eyes and tastebuds to the wonderousness of greasy junk. If I'm on my own, it's really, really easy to keep on walking past any of these places because I know it's junk and I don't really want it. But when it's at home, it smells just so good... making him eat it in the other room is a good suggestion, thanks!
I like the idea of a safe box. We do put goodies up on a top shelf, but only have the one main cupboard in the kitchen anyway so it means every time you need something you open the cupboard... my willpower there is good though, I only give in to a raid about once a fortnight. But having a 'safe place' of healthy snacks is a really good idea - at the moment, my almonds are right alongside the chips and chocolate... eek.
Thanks so much everyone for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it! it's always interesting to hear how people cope with adopting a CICO lifestyle.0 -

second thing. SELF CONTROL. it's really mind over matter. JUST DON'T EAT IT. i grab my belly and jiggle it. that really helps me kick cravings to the curb.
This is the best tip I think I've heard so far!0 -

My boyfriend is well aware that I count calories and use myfitnesspal and he is very understanding. As soon as I showed him the stats, he stopped filling the house with chips and beer.
However, as I feel a bit guilty that he had to change his habits because of me, I tend to make bigger and fattier meals and drink more than I really want whenever we're together. Just to prove a point! That I am still "a cool girlfriend" who eats burgers and drinks beer.
The problem is that we eat together about half of the week. It is hard to compensate that.
The worst part is sometimes, I kind of use him as an excuse to overeat! I know he doesn't really need lasagna for dinner, but I feel like lasagna, and I would never cook if I was by myself.
So actually, it's more a fight with myself than a fight with him.0 -
just remember, you are doing it for YOU, only YOU and not your partner.0

I'm interested to hear how people get around temptation around the house? I'm great at sticking to my meal plans and calories in the daytime, but the evenings are a killer. My partner is one of those lucky ones who doesn't need to diet and balances our healthy dinners with lots of junk snacks - and even when I've tried to replace with the healthier versions of things, or not buy the junk for my SO in the first place, it still somehow ends up in the house...
Most days I can resist. Yesterday was a great example: first, the office team ordered KFC for lunch but I stuck to my prawn salad. THEN my SO asked me to get KFC on the way home - so I stopped at Tesco first and picked up some salmon and greens for myself. Resisting KFC twice in one day I think is some kind of record. However, other days (especially weekends) are a killer.
What are your tricks and tips?
this is what i do:
my husband loves my healthy cooked meals. so that area im fine with, he has no desperate need for takeaways. so again great.. HOWEVER at night oh my lord he eats crap. he can sit there and polish off a whole pack of biscuits with his tea.
or a massive bar of chocolate. i hate him.
what i do is eat with him. i hold calories back for a little snack myself and that helps. the night times are the worst for me.0 -
I understand what you are going through. My SO is five to six inches taller than me and weighs 100 pounds smaller. I also have two toddlers one that has sensory issues and another that is a regular toddler, some days he eats well others not so much. Dinner at my house is so hectic. My son that eats like a toddler is also autistic so is prone to melt downs. My SO refuses to eat chicken or fish
Last night for example I made Meat ball casserole for SO and nephew and niece, TS got some meat balls but ate gummy snacks(some nights he wins the fight) TD got pudding because of sensory thing. Me I had a piece of chicken and some ww mac and cheese.
My only indulgent I have during the day is my snack at night I always save me 150 calories for my peanut butter granola bar. After dinner my SO acts like a garbage truck. He will eat 4-5 little debbies the big size, chips, crakers, peanut butter sandwiches, candy bars. And not gain an ounce. It ls so unfair.
The thing that keeps me going is the pounds that is dropping. A coat he bought me 4 years ago that was to small now I can zip up. That is what helps me say no. Plus it gets easier with time. It's little victories that helps you get stronger.

My boyfriend and I are like this. I want to lose weight, he doesn't. He buys a lot of junk. Thankfully the stuff he likes, I am allergic to. [cookies, cake, muffins, etc]
When he does bring home something I like, such as potato chips, I just simply ignore it. Now, I am not saying I never eat potato chips, I just prefer single serving bags over big family sized bags of chips. It gets easier over time.0 -
I have a cupboard shelf set aside for my boyfriend's snacks. All of his chips and cookies go on the higher shelf. This way it's out of sight and when I do have to open it (I keep my measuring cups and vitamins on the lower shelf) his goodies are not at eye level and I really don't think of what is in there unless I need to restock. He doesn't live with me but this is a good way for me to keep these items on hand for when he comes over and I'm not tempted to get into them because I forget that they are there.
My fiance doesn't live with me either and I do the same thing with his Fritos - they are above the cupboard where I can neither see them nor reach them, and I forget they are there.
I also keep our chocolate out of sight.0 -
i don't have any off limit foods or drinks, so i do my best to preplan and stick with it. however, i am mostly working on mindful eating (paying attention to my body's signals for what it wants and doesn't). i don't strictly go by calorie counts limits for the day.0

You did the best thing by 100% not giving in to the KFC, restaurant calorie counts are GROSSLY inaccurate....there is no way to know with any certainty what the true CC is for anything from KFC...you were smart and strong. Kudos!!!

THank you everyone so much for your replies, I'm learning a lot here!
(as for the £5.99 bucket on tuesdays at KFC, I saw that earlier this week and 'neglected' to tell the SO about the deal... otherwise I foresee even more chicken at the house!)0
