A little bit about me

Hi everyone,
I've been lurking on MFP for some time now and have decided to try this community board today.
I live in the Montreal area. I am 45, with 2 sons (8 and 11) and a husband. I've been using DietPower to track my food intake on and off for over 5 years now. I got a Polar Loop last spring and I like all the stats it gives me.
I usually work-out at home through exergaming or videos. I completed the New Rules of Lifting for women 3 years ago and loved it but it was hard to find 2-3 hours to go to the gym 3 times a week in order to do the program. It took a commitment that work and kids are just not allowing for me right now. I do love lifting and would love to set up a home gym that includes a proper squat rack and lat pull down machine but for now I make do with free weights. I zumba about 5-6 times per week and do some body weight and free weight exercices too. I do a little yoga to try to improve my flexibility because it needs a lot of work.
I'd like to lose about 5 lbs but my main goal is to improve my fitness.
I am looking for people to talk to and with whom I can exchange ideas about health and fitness so I am hoping to find like minded people on this forum.
Looking forward to making new friends,
Caroline aka ScoobaChick

Welcome Caroline!
It sounds like you're all set to reach your goals. As I see it there's plenty of us on here that could actually benefit a lot in seeing your fitness updates and progress.
I love everything about your post. A squat rack at home I think is the dream of many of us I hope you can get it.

Hi Caroline,
You sound like you are already pretty fit. I think lifting/strength training is great for everybody. I would not concentrate on weight loss or gain especially if you are strength training. Instead get some calipers and a tape measure and track your percentage body fat and various circumference measurements. For any given volume muscle weighs significantly more than fat. So it is very possible to gain lean muscle and shrink you waist size, decrease your percentage body fat and not lose weight. Also when you gain lean muscle your BMR (basal metabolic rate) increases which means you burn more calories 24X7 at rest. Lean muscle looks a lot better than fat too.
Check this: ONE POUND OF FAT VERSUS ONE POUND OF MUSCLE: CLEARING UP THE MISCONCEPTIONS:

Keep up the good strength training and throw in some HIT training and an hour off pure cardio a week.
Take care,
David from Houston, TX and Santa Rosa Beach Florida0
