I am 41 years old with anklosing spondylitis which is beautifully managed by medication and also Fibromyalgia, a new diagnosis for my chronic pain. Size 22, just under 16 stone and sit at a desk four days a week. Only a 5 foot 4" on a tall day! My problem is when I'm in pain all my joints ache and I struggle to get motivated to move - obviously to the fridge is fine! Anyone else know how to cope with ability and ambition (at a snails pace!)

So sorry to hear about your chronic pain.
I don't know anything about your conditions but I do know weight loss begins in the kitchen.
If you haven't already plug in your stats into mfp and create your calorie goal
Read the stickie posts at the top of this forum too, there's a lot of helpful info in there.
Come onto the forums for advice and interact with people / add friends ( you can add me , I'll send you a request) they can be great motivational support.
Take baby steps and don't go for too aggressive goal 1lb or .5lb , slow and steady wins the race.

Get used to weighing and logging and then you can see where you need to make the changes
On good days if you can move more try it but don't punish yourself.

You don't need to try a fad diet or cut out a major food group ( unless for health reason advised by docs) just eat a bit less of your normal foods. Have a nose on the neutrino and recipie forums too loads of ideas there.

Good luck with your journey em

You can lose a lot of weight by just creating a calorie deficit and sticking to it every day. Basically, eating less food. Maybe after you lose a little weight, it might be easier to add some exercise? Even if you can't exercise, don't worry. Let MFP give you a calorie goal (you don't necessarily need a 2lb/week pace, slower is better), weigh everything you eat on a kitchen scale and log accurately on MFP. You'll lose weight before you realize it.

Like the others have said... find your cal allowance... and stick to it. I do not currently work out but I've managed to drop 50 pounds since joining MFP (70 in total). It is most definitely about your caloric intake. And weight your foods. Even the "small" things like ketchup.. or your oils.. milk in your coffee, etc .. weigh them all. Also, be as consistent as possible. When you have a bad day or slip up.. get right back on the site and start new.
  • Thanks guys, am aiming to stick to the calarie checking and just keep positive! Every little helps!!

The amount and type of food you eat is WAY more important than what you do with your body. Just like getting your oil changed regularly and using decent gas helps your car run regularly, the type of food you put in you helps you be more healthy.

Unfortunately, I don't know what sorts of foods will help or hurt the conditions you have. I will tell you that making sure you eat at a deficit for the amount of calories you burn a day is key. Best way to figure that out is get an activity monitor, whether or not you're going to be running marathons, the information it provides is still very valuable.

Log everything, check the numbers on the activity monitor and drink water. This is definitely a journey where knowledge is power.
