Question About Sodium

I know that too much sodium can cause temporary water retention and weight gain. What I'm wondering about is how much? I typically go over on my sodium anywhere between 400-600 mg each day. Is this enough to cause water retention? Another thing I'm curious about is this. If my body is accustomed to going over by this much daily, will it perceive this as normal and not retain water? Will it always retain water? Also, I drink well over 64 ounces of water per day, if that makes a difference.

It really depends on your body chemistry. If you're sodium sensitive it might have some effect on water weight, but as long as you're drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated, and your blood pressure is in normal range, I wouldn't stress about it. Also, if you're diabetic, your insulin levels can have an affect on water retention as well.
Water retention gain isn't 'fat gain', it's just extra water in your body. When you work out, your muscles hold extra water to heal themselves and make themselves stronger, for example. Sometimes, your body needs a little extra water.0
