When I look up a food for calorie count example banana there are so many choices. How do I know which one to pick?

I recommend looking for the entry labeled "USDA"

Bananas come in different sizes, so the most reliable way would be to weigh it, and as mentioned above, look for USDA labeled bananas!

Items in the food journal section also have 'confirmations'. Typically the more confirmation the more legit the value.

For basic foods like bananas, you can usually find entries that offer lots of different units for servings in the drop down menu (grams, ounces, milliliters, fluid ounces, teaspoons, tablespoons, cup, sometimes one piece of the fruit or vegetable), and if you click on them to pull up the nutrient listing, you'll see that they're complete -- i.e., they include figures for potassium, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron. These are generally accurate entries copied by MFP (rather than users) from the USDA database.

You can also compare MFP entries to the USDA database at http://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/search
