Why should I be eating?

So I'm counting my calories now but I know I'm not getting all the nutrition I need. What are some good foods to eat daily that give me the things I need but are low in calories?

That is a very big and broad question! The possibilities are endless. Could you help us narrow it down a little? Are there any macro or micronutrients that you're specifically concerned about?
I tried to make a list once of all the foods you could include in your diet. It didn't end well, but it might help to explain what I mean: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10190957/help-what-can-i-eat/p10 -

You control your calories through portioning. All foods are on the table. It helps me to imagine my plate half-full of vegetables. My protein and carb take up the rest. Then I am assured I am eating a balance of foods at every meal, especially if I finish it with a glass of milk.0 -

They also have a vegetarian table.0 -
The Worlds Healthiest Foods site - lots of great info and very detailed! If I'm at a loss on ideas or just wanting to try something new, I go here: http://www.whfoods.com/0

Avoid highly processed stuff (frozen meals, etc.) if possible...they might be low in calorie but they don't tend to be very nutritious. Shop the perimeter of the grocery store for the most part...meat, veggies, dairy, etc. You can loose weight eating stuff from packages, but that wasn't your question. If you want the most nutritious food for your calories, you're best off making it at home and keeping it colorful!0

A variety of: vegetables, lean protein, fruit, whole grains, pretty much in that order.0
