Has anyone had success working with Slam Balls? I have never used them in my workout. I would be interested in buying a few different weights and trying them out. Any feedback on this is appreciated.

I use them as part of an overall lifting workout. They are great for getting your hear rate up. Incorporate them in between sets to create an HIIT routine.

If not looking for them to bounce consider making your own. This video shows you how. If you don't have old basketballs around check the neighborhood garage sales. A mini basketball filled with sand or pea gravel is about 8 pounds, a regulation size ball about 22.

Sample video, lots of others and written instructions via Google:

@Packerjohn, thanks for the advise and video on making a homemade ball. Buying these brand new is very expensive. I think I will start by making my own and see if the workout is something I want to keep in my normal routine.

If you get them put together right the are pretty durable. I helped coach a junior high track team and made some. Lasted 3 track seasons of pretty heavy use before I had to retape.

I really want to do this! I watched one of the related videos and the guy went a took sand from the beach then sealed it with a rubber patch kit. How did you seal it? and were they treated as medicine balls or slam balls? I can just imagine myself slamming a big sandy mess on the floor.

I had the kids using them as medicine/slam balls. They were throwing them underhand (scoop style for distance) and behind them. Also did slamming into the ground (grass area not concrete).

I filled some with sand and some with pea gravel. I cut a flap in the ball, filled them and sealed the ball with tape. I would think the tire plug method would be better.

When the ones with sand started to leak it would be just a few grains at first, you would notice before the whole thing gives way.

Thanks! That's super helpful into to know. I'm a sucker for home gym DIY projects. :)
