What's with daily weigh-ins?

I have noticed a lot of people doing daily weigh-ins. Does your weight really fluctuate that much in a 24 hour period?

My weight fluctuates quite a bit. Usually around 1 pound or 1.5 pounds, but if exposed to gluten, them 3 pounds or a little more. Enough to be painful!
I weigh every day because it helps me focus. I need extra external anchors to focus. ADHD runs in the family, and while I'm not diagnosed, working with my kid has really shown me my weaknesses. Or realities. Whatever.0 -
Yup! If I don't weigh daily I miss my "lowest weight" for the week. I could loose weight all week, eat something high in sodium and register a 2-3 pound gain in time for weigh in day. Without daily weighing, I would see no loss and get discouraged. By weighing daily I know the random 2-3 extra is just water bloat.

Yes - although if you are going to weigh daily I would highly recommend getting an app such as "Happy Scale". It allows you to input your weight for the day and then shows it on a graph. It irons out fluctuations due to water etc I suppose. I find it useful.0

It I didn't weigh daily the fact that my weight is currently 3-5lbs over last week (and the last 11 months) would worry me0

I love, love, LOVE Trendweight. If I saw too high of a fluctuation months ago I would have freaked out and immediately cut calories. Because of Trendweight, I know the exact times of the month to expect spikes and I can predict my weight after a high sodium day within 0.2 pounds. It's helped me really know the ins and outs of my body and I love the reading/seeing the data.

If you want an accurate trend then the more data points the better.
It's also very educational for many people to understand their normal daily/weekly/monthly fluctuations to take away the emotional impact of seeing a change in weight which is has no relationship with recent calorie intake.0 -
I'm exactly the opposite. I can go weeks without weighing myself. I lean much more heavily on measurements to tell me if I've lost or not (Hips, waist, thighs, etc)0

Even just starting I love having all the extra data. The fluctuations don't freak me out. I'm off to check out Trendweight, thanks for the rec!
The other part to the equation is that if I don't start a daily habit I will forget to weigh myself at all. Not the end of the world, but again I like the extra data!0 -
Every bodies weight fluctuates every day. Body weight isn't stagnant.0

Another +1 for trend weight, very impressed by its accuracy. It estimated, from my weight loss alone, that I was at an average 917 calorie deficit each day, whilst my MFP nutrition puts me at 857 calories under each day, which is impressively accurate to me, given that we know it's always going to be difficult to accurately gauge calories burnt through exercise.0

I too like to see the new lows and don't let the bobbles bug me. I weigh every day & use fitbits weekly average as my official weight. It really reveals the trend. And I am such a naughty monkey I erase every week's one highest weight because that usually just reflects water retention, etc. and take the six day average. It is incredibly empowering & cathartic to to toss out that annoying highest weight every week. I look forward to it!!0

Weight fluctuates throughout the day and from day today. I giant 2-5 pounds between 7am and noon every day! I've tested it only a couple of times, but I see it all the time when I weigh in with my trainer, later In the day than when I weigh at home. Obviously it's water weight not fat or muscle, but it's all the same to the scales.0

I can gain-lose as much as 5 pounds in a 24 hour period depending on hormones, physical activity, dehydration, and sodium consumption. I weigh daily so I just have to pay attention to the general trend.0

I weigh less when I stand straight up vs. hunching over to see the numbers fluctuate.0

I have weighed daily since I started, takes the power away from the scale for me. In the last month I've finally started tracking with Happy Scale because I'll be closing in on goal in a few months and the nuances will become more important to me.0

I used to weigh daily until I realized weighing myself daily was making me go crazy even though I realized it was just fluctuations. So now I weigh once a week and I'm less obsessed.0

A lot of people are going to disagree with you on this just to let you know because daily weigh ins are pretty popular on this site.
I think if daily weigh ins work for people to help them track their trends or get more data then that's great.
However I do also think that for some people, such as myself, daily weigh ins are a horrible idea and lead to obsession and self loathing.
I have found that for people off of this site, weighing in daily would strike a large majority of them as unhealthy. However just because someone weighs themselves daily doesn't mean it's actually unhealthy for them if that makes sense.
Pretty much you do you. If weighing in daily works for you that's good, but if it doesn't work for you that's good to realize that.0 -

Not everyone is trying to lose weight though. I'm actually trying to maintain my weight now and by weighing in daily and looking at my trendweight graph, I learned I need to eat even more than suggested because I'm still losing weight when I don't want to anymore.
It's overkill and unhealthy for people who can't handle fluctuations or think a few days of no loss is a plateau, not people who like data or want to get a better look at the way their body works daily.
All I have to do every morning is wake up, step on a scale for ten seconds, step off and go about my day. My scale syncs to Fitbit, MFP, and Trendweight with no effort on my part.0 -

If the fluctuations bother you then it's probably good to not weigh daily. Likewise if it becomes something that decides if you will have a good day or bad. I look at it as additional data. Makes no difference when I suddenly gain 3lbs because I know it's water retention for one reason or another. If I couldn't weigh tomorrow morning, it wouldn't upset me. I like the numbers, the trends, the averages.0 -
Almost anything can be unhealthy if it is approached unhealthily...

Why? Everyone has given completely valid and sensible reasons for doing so.
Some people probably shouldn't do it because they can't handle the fluctuations. But after all the sensible responses here, I don't understand why you think it's not healthy.0 -

I weigh daily and use a trending app, like many others here. I've done so for over two years. Before that, I only weighed once or twice a year (at doctor's office). I didn't even own a scale. Neither way is healthier or unhealthier. I just choose to have another set of data in addition to the mirror and clothing fit.0
