Engage your core

I hear this often - to engage my core. And I used to think it meant to hold in the abdominal muscle. But I've now heard that's incorrect, and that you're actually supposed to, like, push it out. And I briefly checked out a couple of exercise web sites but I'm getting conflicting answers.

So does anyone know how to correctly engage the core?

Get down on one knee, stroke its hand...

Sorry, I have a sarcastic remark quota to meet.

To me, "engaging" has always simply meant "get them involved." When you do a bicep curl, you know the difference you feel between just throwing the weight up your arm and moving it in one, controlled, slower motion? In one scenario, it's just gravity/inertia. In the other scenario, your bicep is the part doing work. So, whatever you're doing that engages the core, just make sure your core is helping with the effort. This can happen with even arm-specific lifts.

This is my understanding, of course. Hope that makes sense.
