Customizing Protein and Fat or other variables?

I've been lurking and reading and it seems like some people are perhaps customizing the diet plans. Is this right? If so, I'm wondering why. It seems like it's around fat and protein.
I ask because I'm dubious that the current calorie count they have me on will actually result in weight loss - it seems like a lot of calories (over 1400/day) considering my age (52) and minimal exercise.
It feels like I'm eating as much food as usual just more protein and less carbs and sugar. I haven't weighed myself yet. I've only been on the diet for about 4 days now.

There is a recommended amount of protein and fat based on body mass. If you are heavier it can be trickier.
The ratios shouldn't affect your weight loss. Keeping up protein is to preserve muscle, hitting a fat minimum is for hormonal function.
If you want to shift your ratios you can do that under the Goals tab from your Home page I believe.0
