Map my fitness and iPhone steps

When I start my day I gain extra calories by the amount of steps I take. Then every evening I go for a walk and use map my walk to track things. Once I am done my walk all the steps from my walk give me steps but anything I earned early for just normal walking is gone and I do not get anymore for the day. Do I have something set up wrong or is that just how it works?
