Bodybuilding with Gout

I'm 41 and trying to get back in shape. It was easy to lift heavy and eat high protein when i was younger, but now I am prone to gout attacks. My doctor wants me to switch to a low protein diet and cut down on red meat (high in purines). I had been eating 1-2 pounds of meat per day and have cut back to 3-4 oz per day. The attacks have subsided but I'm concerned that if I try and ramp up my protein intake I'll get more attacks again. Anyone know if a high protein and low purine diet is ok? I can bump my protein macro from 25% back up to 50% without any increase in meat intake (yay for eggs, greek yogurt and whey powder).

    50% protein seems super high. Protein should be around .8-1 gram of protein per pound of lean body mass. You can hit this with low purine foods. Many vegetarians can hit .8 grams if they plan carefully.

    50% protein intake? Why do you need that? You only need, at most, .8g of protein per pound of body weight. What are you aiming for in protein intake in terms of grams? Also, you might want to consult your doctor for safer sources of protein, I'm not comfortable giving advice to those who have known medical issues.

    My husband is a heavy lifter and suffers from gout (also close in age) He maintains high protein, just cuts the red meat and increases his fish and chicken along with protein shakes including whey and peanut butter. Doctor recommended berries for the attacks. Not sure how it works but dark berries (blueberries, raspberries.etc..) serve as a counter and reduces the length of time of the attacks greatly. Like I said, not a doctor, but he was advised by one and it does help a lot....good luck

    i just had this meeting with my doc.. i was told i had gout 2 weeks ago, what sucks is i was eating healthy like you now i have to change my whole diet up due to this!! from what he told me its a balance.. you do not have to cut it out as long as you intake what will help you break it down. all berries especially cherry's when they are in season are the best to break down uric acid.. i have yet to try since i am terrified of another flare up but eggs, yogurt, berries and allot of vitamin c apparently helps your body break it down.. oh and omega 3.. i am not try8ing to build do my situation is different then yours. i am trying to loose so i dont need that much protein right now.

    I'm currently at a 1,000 calorie deficit to drop weight (and decrease gout risk). I had been attempting re-comp but going to try to drop 40 lbs before doing a clean bulk. 0.8 grams per pound of bodyweight is what I was aiming for, so around 160g. That would put me at about 35 % protein. If i were to eat 1.0 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight that would put me at 200g (or about 45% protein).

    I've also cut out beer and drastically reduced my intake of other alcoholic beverages, as well as aiming for 16 cups of water per day.

    Why put yourself through all that?

    You dont need THAT much protein (even when "bodybuilding") and if you have repeatedly given yourself bouts of gout, for the love of god, lower the protein in your diet.

    My suggestion would be to eat more veggies/lentils/beans/low fat dairy products and other protein sources which aren't proven to cause reoccurance of gout.

    In any case, for the love of god man, stop eating so much protein. It's unnecessary and obviously causing you problems, why put yourself through that?

    per pound of lean body mass, is not "total body weight".

    What's your body fat percentage?

    lots of people recommend the Fat Shredder macro for weight loss (50P/20F/30C). That's probably only ok if eating at a severe deficit so the overall protein amounts are still now. I have reduced my protein to 25% (close to 0.5g per pound) but will probably not bring that up above 30%, keeping high purine foods to a bare minimum.

    My doctor is a vegarian yoga practicionor who wouldn't know a barbell from a brussel sprout. His recommendations might keep gout at bay, but they also won't help me build any muscle. I guess for now muscle won't be a priority. If i can drop some weight and limit the number of gout attacks, that'll be a victory.
