Bad how? Calorie dense?
A lot of gelato is very similar to ice cream in terms of ingredients, particularly where a huge number of places (particularly in the US and Australia) just serve ice cream and call it gelato because it's trendy. Other gelato is not dairy based, but is still made with fruit and added sugar and will have calories to match the ingredients.
I make ice cream fit my goals pretty much every day.0 -

Because it is ice cream. Why would you think it isn't?
Caveat - I'm not saying ice cream/gelato is "bad". I'm saying there's little difference between ice cream and gelato (which is Italian for ice cream).0 -

1 cup of dark chocolate gelato is around 400 calories. Not as much dairy, but lots of sugar.0 -
Neither are bad, but both are delicious!0

My question too. Also, why would it be particularly different?
And whether called ice cream or gelato, there's a pretty wide range of options (including how many calories they have).
Most of the ones I eat are around 200 calories per serving, which isn't that hard to fit in a day.0 -
Are you confusing gelato with lower-calorie sorbet vs. ice cream?0

I think gelato is generally richer than ice cream, ice cream richer than sorbet. I've seen some chocolate sorbet out there but it was terrible and not worth eating.
Now, froyo is where it's at.0 -

^^ This!
They're definitely not same, and not comparable to sherbet or sorbet or frozen yogurt, for that matter - all different, all delicious in their own way.0 -
Now I want some talenti.
I work ice cream and/or Gelato into my calorie goal.
Now if you'd said GELATI, that's an entirely different thing.

The recipe is generally slightly different, with less cream and egg yolk (or no egg at all) than ice cream, and the process is a bit different too (slower churning = denser product.) It's still got milk, cream, and sugar though so it's not a huge difference calorie-wise.0 -

There are some differences. Gelato has a lower proportion of cream/eggs and is usually denser than ice cream, which tends to be a little fluffier. Because of that, I think it's possible to eat smaller servings of gelato and be satisfied, so it just kind of depends on your preference.
We spent a month in Florence a few years ago and ate gelato every single day (sometimes twice a day) while I was losing, so I'm a little put out by this insinuation that there's something "bad" about gelato. Or ice cream for that matter...

I thought this too and I've spent a lot of time in Italy
Well one lives and learns0 -
I really don't know what you are talking about. Did you think it was fat free...or frozen ice or something? And what's bad about it? I personally choose not to fit it in very much, but a serving or two is doable and it's delicious.0

Bad?0 -
Ok everyone seems to offended that I used the word bad. I just thought it had less calories than ice cream. That's all. Sadly, I never seem to lose any weight if I eat ice cream.0

The only place I've ever seen gelato is this forum.0

what a shocking discovery!
It is generally lower in fat, but higher in sugar than other styles of ice cream. Gelato typically contains less air and more flavoring than other kinds of frozen desserts, giving it a density and richness that distinguishes it from the others.

= a *kitten* ton of calories + An amazing flavor and texture
I wonder if in the end you were thinking of sorbet XD I've never heard of anyone confusing the two, but i'm giving you the benefit of the doubt0 -
