Turboing, A diary - 36 hours, 0 calories, 2 HIT workouts

Turboing is like fasting but faster. The idea is to go 36 hours of drinking only water, consume zero calories, and incorporate two high intensity training sessions. I have heard about the benefits of complete calorie forbearance and thought I'd give it a go. This is my first time so I picked 36 hours. It's really just skipping three full meals and getting a night's rest before the second HIT workout.

This post is to document my moods, energy levels, and general experience with Turboing.

My Diary

July 1st, 2013

6 pm - So it begins... ate dinner and began the zero-calorie stopwatch.

Today July 2nd, 2013

6 am - Woke up feeling fine. I often don't eat until after my workout in the mornings anyway so I don't expect to feel any different. I consider my post workout meal to be my first large contingent of skipped calories. We'll see how it goes.

8 am - Off to the gym.

10am -

Noon -

3 pm -

6 pm - 24 hour mark.

Note: I'm sure "Turboing," has been used in conjunction with diet and fitness before, but I'm using it here to denote fasting taken to the next level.

P.s. Thanks everyone for your responses that show a surprising level of interest and enthusiasm. I really was expecting the opposite. One thing I forgot to touch on and want to make clear is that I will not be doing a before-and-after weigh-in or vogue shoot. This is not a get-thin-quick scheme. The purpose of this is to see if I feel substantially different. More energy? Less? Warmer complexion? Gaunt? My final entry will be the morning after the Turboing ends, which I think will be most indicative of the results.

High Intensity Training....................basically going all out in fast intervals to spike your HR as fast as possible for maximum "punch" during your workout.

High Intensity Training. I think. Maybe I am using the term wrong. Maybe it's supposed to be HIIT for High Intensity Interval Training.

I'll be doing sprints and cross-fit type exercises. At least that's the plan, we'll see. Today should be fine.

I wish you luck.. however, you'll probably feel shaky/weak and get headaches past the 24 hour mark.

Its HIIT for High Intensity Interval Training. And I will be interested to read your results. Even though I would never give this a try. I would never go that long without food!! Lol

Without going into posting articles from one science journal or another - because the more I read the more I realize no one can agree on anything - I'll just say that we'll see.

    t's an experiment.

My longest fast was 72 hours. It’s not as hard as one might think (if you’re in the right frame of mind). I’m interested to see how adding a workout affects you. Good luck :)

It's a good way to "reset" your clock so to speak and rid the body of toxins. You can have green or black tea as well and some low sodium broth (1 cup). Keep us posted!

I just don't understand what this could accomplish, other than being hungry for 36 hours!? I'm all for experiments but this one seems like a huge waste of time and energy....

I didn't realize there was a time limit for editing posts. So I have to repost instead of going back to the top which is kind of a bummer, but it is what it is...

11am - I just got back from the gym. I feel great. Normally I would grab a protein shake or eat some eggs so this is the first real calorie intake I'm skipping. My stomach is starting to growl a little.

Do you plan to nap at all during this time?

If I feel tired then maybe. But the last thing I want is to be hungry and unable to sleep late into the night because I napped in the day.

Ha sorry guys I didn't think anyone was following anymore so I posted on a new thread. This is how it went! :)

    "Well, it was something."

I called it Turboing: fasting for 36 hours coupled with two sessions of intense workouts. Here's how it went.

    My Diary

    July 2nd, 2013

6 am - Woke up feeling fine. I often don't eat until after my workout in the mornings anyway so I don't expect to feel any different. My post workout meal that I’ll skip will be my first contingent of missing calories.

8 am - Off to the gym.

11am - I just got back from the gym. I feel good. Normally I would grab a protein shake or eat some eggs at this point, meaning this is my first real test of a forgone meal. My stomach is starting to grovel.
Noon – I am very hungry.

2 pm – I’ve gotten up to look for food in the fridge multiple times and have had to remind myself, “No, you’re not starving you’re just bored.” I don’t feel tired or weak. I actually have more energy than I usually do. But it would be nice to eat.

3 pm – Strike that. Time is slowing down. I keep fluctuating between feeling like I’m going to be sick and going to sleep.

4:30 pm – The sick feeling has passed. I drank two big glasses of water 20 minutes ago and I think it really helped, though my stomach is still talking out loud. I’m glad I settled on 36 hours of zero calories. Initially, I was going to go for 60 hours. Forget that. I will never.

6 pm - 24 hour mark. I feel much better than I did at 3 pm and so it’s time to get in my second HIIT. Off to the gym.

8 pm – Back from the gym. I’m sore but that’s a good thing. Between the worst I felt and now is like night and day. I feel like I could go another 24 hours without eating. But that would mean I would want to do that, which I don’t. Finished my food and exercise diary.

    Today July 3rd, 2013

6 am – Just woke up and I feel great. I just bested my max rep squat and push-up counts that I last tested a week ago. Chicken is in the oven and I am looking forward to a healthy meal.

Final Thoughts: There were times when I absolutely thought I was not going to make it and twice I was within a breath of eating something. It was hard and people that do this regularly have my condolences. Halfway through I felt nauseas and wanted to fall over. That being said the feeling of being sick lasted for only about 90 minutes, and I think it was more a symptom of withdrawal from caffeine than it was a rebellion against zero calories. I drink a lot of caffeine.

I feel healthy, look better, and am stronger. Though I have no way to measure this, I noticed that my skin is clearer and smoother. I normally have good skin, so this is a surprise for me to notice. Was it worth it? Definitely not. I missed food. But I said I was going to do it and I did.

    That, at least, is something.

Thanks for the update. I can honestly say I would not voluntarily do this....tho *have* done similar before surgeries including workouts. I'm glad you did this if only so we could see what the results are. Congrats on keeping in there and not giving in to your temptation.
