foot pain from running

Just a quick question..

I was out running last week and one foot went numb with pins and needles, it didn't hurt though so I just kept running until I was home. However since then I have had a pain at the bottom of my foot near my toes, its not really painful but its uncomfortable and gives me shivers. I don't feel it all the time, mainly when I am on hard surfaces or putting a lot of weight on it?

Anyone know what this could be, or tips to help the pain?

Its putting me off going running at the moment as its uncomfortable and the pain makes my stomach go! But it doesn't seem to hurt at the gym on the machines & tredmill etc.. guessing its because its a bit of a bouncier surface?

Thank you!

    It sounds like Metatarsalgia

    runnersworld.com/injury-prevention-recovery/metatarsalgia

"If you develop metatarsalgia, give your feet a break. Reduce your mileage, run on softer surfaces, or temporarily switch to a low-impact activity. Treat acute symptoms with ice during the first 24 hours and take anti-inflammatories as needed. See your doctor or a podiatrist if your symptoms don't improve in 10 days."

Note: another common foot injury is plantar fasciitis but that tents to show up in the middle of the foot (and is much harder to cure!)

Foot numbness most often implies nerve compression...if your affected outside of the third toe and the inside of the fourth toe this known as a Morton's neuroma, the nerve slowly develops a thickened coat of scar tissue. This may or may not be your issue.

But keep in mind pins and needles will 99% of the time point back to nerves, nerve endings, etc..

I have numb toe issues in my right foot (running only), and getting a wider toe shoe and loosen up laces help with this. I also have tried different inserts only to go back to the inserts that came with my shoes. I run with it and most times it goes away. I can usually change the way I run for a few minutes to take the compression off the forefoot landing taking some weight off it and I am usually able to re-waken the toes..

thanks for the comments, it is just below my last three toes.. its not consistent but I do get random surpges of it hurting even when I'm not exercising, like last night getting out of the shower then it hurt for an hour or so but is fine at the moment, just running on it is putting me off if it is going to result in the pain increasing to what it is now..

I'll do the gym this week instead of hopefully by next week its calmed down, I have skiing the weekend after next so don't want it to effect that!

Not saying it is, but that is same symptoms I had from plantar fascitis.

I initially thought it was the extreme nerve damage I had as a side effect from chemo so I ignored it and I still deal with the P.F. with years later.

I would have it checked out by a specialist just to be safe.

How often do you run and about what distance?

Sounds like metatarsalgia to me too. Numbness/pins+needles can accompany painful symptoms due to digital nerve branches being compressed between the metatarsal heads. Metatarsal pads can be added to insoles to help ease and prevent symptoms. I definitely second getting shoes with wider and deeper toe boxes to accommodate the forefoot. If things don't improve than see your doctor. All the best.

In the winter I run twice a week - around 10 miles in total. When the weather is warmer I was planning to increase my runs either in distance or go once more a week as I really enjoy it!

Make sure not to strap your shoe hard.
