low impact aerobics vs beginners yoga

I am 50, female and to say I am out of shape is a understatement.
Started doing Jane Fonda aerobics today. not even 10 minutes into it, my heart rate was
up to 160. I know too high. I wonder if I will still get the benefits in cardio doing yoga... and work my way up?

You won't get the same cardio benefits from yoga in most cases as yoga is meant to be done too slowly and with good deep breathing. You shouldn't get out of breath doing beginner yoga. But it will improve your strength and flexibility and greatly improve mood. So I'd say do your yoga and maybe work on cardio by doing intervals. I like to use the lower step in my hall and just step up and down. If your heartrate goes too high for your or you get out of breath take a walking break by walking in place, when your vitals lower to a comfortable level start stepping up on the stair again. I set a time for 15 or 20 mins. After a few weeks of doing this you can try the Jane Fonda tape again.

There are many benefits to beginner yoga, but cardiovascular benefits are probably not one of them. However, this may be a good way to ease yourself back into fitness. Beginner yoga is also a great way to warm up for something more strenuous - I do yoga before I lift weights.

Leslie Sansone walking dvds are a great way to start moving. You just do what you can and work up to more.

Thanks for the input. I have a step, but got bored with it, guess I should grin and bare it if I want to get into shape again. Maybe do yoga for toning .
