Depends on the quality of the trainer and what you eat.

Since the trainer is only with you for an hour here and there the biggest responsibility is still on you.

Will they be preparing all your meals and forcing you to stick to them?

A trainer provides training...training does not guarantee you lose weight. They're also likely to offer you dietary advice...but it's still on you to heed it, be consistent, and be patient.

Weight loss, fitness gains, body re-composition...all of these things take a lot of time...unfortunately, people just have very unrealistic expectations and have that immediate gratification syndrome.

    What is it you want?
    Faster weight loss.
    Not a good idea.
    How overweight are you?
I'd spend my money on a PT to show me form on all my weight training lifts so I can build some muscle and look fabulous after the weight loss.

We provide training advice and instruction and some do have good info on how to eat, but overall it's still up to you. You can have the best trainer in the world, but if you're eating habits suck, they will never be able to train you hard enough to counter it.

Exercise is for fitness. Lifting weights can up your metabolism. Eating less calories is for weight loss.

The best way to see results is track what you eat and make sure you have a calorie deficit.

I have a personal trainer that I see twice a week. I've been seeing him for a month and have seen a huge difference than when I worked out alone. He is helping me with weight loss and strengthening so that I become mobile. After that we will be moving towards weight lifting and training for crossfit. He has really helped me and is a good fit. Finding a trainer that is a good fit for you may take trying a few. I was lucky in finding him the first time around. He's my age and really works great with those that are overweight. I actually look forward to going to the gym and workout 6 days a week. I don't think I would do this without a trainer. HTH

I had one session with a PT for one hour. He just confused the heck out of me & didn't give me a very effective routine. The routine he gave me would have taken me 2hrs to complete. That is a lot for a first time strength trainee...

I discovered strong lifts 5x5 & it's working very well for me so far. Strong lifts routine Mon,Wed,Fri. Cardio Tues,Thurs.....

Depends on you and depends on the trainer.

If you're the sort of person who isn't terribly self-motivated and needs to be "accountable" to someone to do anything then maybe it would help you.

I've had a couple of great PTs I LOVED training with who who I really achieved with (achievements in fitness and strength that is). I've also seen a few numpties I would never spend any money on.

But in the end what goes down your mouth is your responsibility.

I need to loose 40-50lbs. I have lost 28 lbs so far, well i was down 32 lbs then gained 8 lbs. I don't want to fall back, so that's why I think a PT could help me move forward again.

I think it's best to gain muscle while loosing weight, isn't it? My eating habits over all are good, considering i lost weight so far. But now i need a good structured plan.

    Yep -- that.

I was with my trainer for several months before starting my diet, and I didn't lose an ounce. If anything I gained weight. But he took every opportunity to tell me -- non-judgmentally but professionally -- that we could reach more of my fitness goals faster if I lost some weight. He turned me on to MyFitnessPal, and went over my diary with me a time or two. He helped me establish the mindset I needed to lose weight, and showed me some tools to do it -- but then I was on my own. I'm 75 lbs down, and maintaining, while continuing to make good training progress with him.

That's amazing to hear! Congratulations. Establishing the mindset I need to become more athletic, and reach my goal, is what I need. That's what im hoping for with Pt, so that when im on my own, I will have more tools to maintain. Maintaince is the hardest part i find.

And THIS is exactly what a good trainer should do! Congrats to you!

As already mentioned, it all boils down to the quality of the trainer and your own personal eating habits.

You could buy a good book like New Rules of Lifting for Women, or Strong Curves.
The gym membership and gear all adds up, and there's so much you can do on your own. Ie Bret Contraras the author of strong curves, youtubes lots of his lifts.

Keep eating at a pound a week defecit, get 100g of protein a day in, and learn to lift. You won't build any muscle, unless you really are a complete beginner, but you'll keep what you've got, and as you lose fat the muscle definition will reveal itself (it's hidden under fat when you're overweight).
By the time you get down to goal weight, you may decide to bulk, and build a few pounds of muscle to really get in shape. You would have your form down at that point too.

It will be a very exciting year!

I've been training with my trainer for four months. One of the first things he did was to get me to keep a food diary and introduced me to mfp. He suggested a few tweaks to my diet and encouraged me to eat more, and he checks my diet every now and then. After four months I am 1lb short of losing two stone, down three dress sizes. I know I couldn't and wouldn't have got this far without him.
