weights

hi everyone, just wondered if anyone can advise on what kg weight I should start out on as ive no idea! I do have 1.5 kg but they are a bit light so need to buy some more!

    I would suggest anything up to 25 pounds, 2-5-10-15-20-25. That should be more than enough for most women.

    If you are looking into dumbbells, you should look into an adjustable set.
    If you have some money to spend, I'd join a gym and get under a barbell!

    This is a shot in the dark, but if you are lifting free weights, go heavy enough that you can't do more than 10 reps in a set of whatever exercise. If you are hitting 12 reps, definitely add more weight, but I'd personally add more before then.

    You can easily find a set of used dumbell on craiglist and such for half the price....that 154 pounds of weight, you can find this used for under 75$ or around 150$ new. Not worth a gym membership.

    no... even on the first day of my lifting program I had at least 45 lbs min and then to progress from there...

    and then the deadlift... even if she held all of those weights at the same time... 90 lbs starting... just no :noway:

    I'm just starting out as well and have ZERO upper body strength (think of a snowman shaped body with stick arms shoved in the sides). I have 5, 10 and 15 pound dumbbells. My max for one rep is 20 for only a few exercises and 15 for some others so my last investment were the 15's. I also have a 45 pound kettlebell I use for deadlifts. For me, what I'm doing now IS heavy. I'm hoping to progress to heavier weights and more equipment as I put the work into it and improve.

    not done any exercise for a long time, im just starting out! I have about 100lbs to loose, don't feel confident enough to join a gym so was just going to do the basic dumbbell lifts, along with cross trainer and dvds! :smile:

    Pffft. Mine go up to 45 lbs, and I'm starting to fret about needing more equipment, or finding a gym, because I'm going to "outgrow" them pretty darn soon.

    I agree with a PP that if you can afford a good adjustable set (at LEAST one that gets up to 50, but more would be better), then go for that.

    I think others are getting offended at your tag on the end where you said "That should be enough for most women".

    Thing is, she could advance quickly from there, and IF it's affordable the upfront investment in a block set might be more economical/practical in the long run. I wish I had done it.

    craigslist has olympic barbells for pretty cheap... you'll get a lot more from your workout than just using dumbells :) You can search craigslist for more weights to add to the barbell over time as you progress :) I suggest stronglifts 5 x 5 program (www.stronglifts.com) Its a beginner's program that easily progresses. It doesnt take long to complete, its a total of 5 exercises (barbell squats, bent over rows, bench press, deadlift, and overhead press), where you do only 3 per day 3 days per week... you won't need anything else, and will be suprised how much time it will save you :)

    Some people needs to calm down here, this girl is obviously just starting to work out and probably don't want to be a powerlifter, she doesn't need powerblock up to 100 pounds each. She said it herself, she has 3 pounds dumbells and feel they are a little light.

    A set of poweblock will cost her over 300$ while she can find used dumbells for a lot cheaper than that. She can always buy bigger dumbells later on if she feel the ones she have are not heavy enough.

    And gym membership would really get you the most, as you really would outgrow any kind of mini 25lb dumbbells fairly quickly. Once you get over the confidence thing it will be worth it! But there are also gyms that cater especially for people that have a lot to lose, maybe you would feel more comfortable there...

    But if there is no way we can get you to a gym you would have to invest some money in adjustable ones and be prepared to invest some more in 2-3 months when they got to small. It does go very quickly! I went from 30kg to 65kg deadlifts in my first 2.5 months...

    I give up... I was taught if I don't have anything nice to say not to say anything at all... so yeah... silence :tongue:

    edit: I would like to point out that I have just about the same amount of weight to lose as the OP... and lifting heavy is helping me progress nicely, and I feel confident that I am losing fat rather than lean muscle.

    ill look into buying some adjustable ones then maybe when ive lost a few stone ill look into going to a gym as I know I would benefit best from that!

    Home workout program are made so you don't need a lot of weights to get them done. Most people don't have Squat rack, bench, etc.. at home

    he's right that' this is a good starting set. don't rip him a new one, this is just basic buying advice.
    I would add fractional weights or something that works as a substitute.
  • LOL I do have pink ones but want to get serious now so no any colour will do as long as they do the job! I don't want anything too easy either need to push myself as ive heard it can help weight loss greatly which I never knew!

    You know that 80% of your results for losing weight comes from your nutrition and that you can lose weight without even lifting any weights?

    I understand what you are saying but not everybody is a powerlifter and i never understand why people push other to go to the gym when you can get the same results at home.

    I am not a power lifter and will never be, i respect other goals and everyone way of getting to them. But why would she needs heavy weights? We don't even know what program she is doing at home and i am pretty sure she wont squat, deadlift and bench in it.

    I started with a set of 3 to 24-lb PowerBlocks. They're great for finding out if you like weight training, and for finding a good starting weight for basic exercises if you've never lifted weights before. If you find that you do enjoy it and want to pursue it further, then you'll outgrow them REALLY fast. That said, I'd suggest purchasing some used equipment on craigslist or the like so you don't spend a lot of money on something you may not use for long.
  • no I have no benches or anything like that! im on 1400 cals a day and just looking to build my fitness up! I have a cross trainer, Gillian michaels dvds and just wanted weights to tone and build strength!
