I know a couple girls doing it and swear by it. One girl insists she went from a 43 inch waist to 31 inches. But I thought it was impossible to spot reduce fat. Thoughts?

Complete rubbish. You are not a ball of clay, waiting to be molded by a waist trainer. Any decrease in waist size is due to squashing your fat inward/upward/downward and possibly a bit of dehydration due to sweating while wearing a waist trainer. It is not going to give permanent results.

Waste of time for fat loss. Any reduction is due to compression and is temporary. If wearing some tight worked, then all the girls wearing pants and shirts to small for them all the time should be thinner and those cloths should get looser. Of course this doesn't happen.

It is my understanding that the majority of "waist trainers" on the market and being pushed by people like the Kardashians are simply glorified Spanx. Meaning they are stretchy elastic material, as opposed to a corset. Stretchy elastic isn't going to train your waist to do anything. If it did, I'd be tiny from wearing Spanx for so many years.

The girls I know doing it are using steel boned corsets.

You need to be wearing your steel boned upwards of 20 hours a day to make any permanent change. Even then things kinda return to normal if you stop for any length of time. It takes years of dedication.

I keep my steelies for nights out only.

Ah the girl I know who supposedly lost 12 inches in a short period of time from waist training said she only wears hers 2 hours per day.

If you are talking about a wrap or something you wear, that is not going to work. Being fit is not easy, if it were everyone would be fit. There is no magic pill either. It is consistent hard work, monitoring your food intake and what you eat that gets you where you want to be.

I have had several people try to sell me body wraps, claiming they work wonders and you don't have to change your diet or even exercise! That's Bullsh*t! I won't even waste my time listening to them. They can sell crazy somewhere else, because I know what I've done over the past year! I have worked my butt off. And it wasn't easy but I did it. And its finally gone, and I will keep it off.

I'm a volunteer historian and wear a steel boned corset when I'm doing living history presentations. I don't tight lace but I can get an inch or two reduction on my waist while wearing the corset. Even on days that I wear the corset for 12+ hours, as soon as I take it off my waist goes right back to the measurement it was before I put the corset on. The only way a corset could possibly help with weight loss is that some people have a harder time eating tons of food when you're wearing a corset.

I knew a girl once that did this with boned corsets. Seemed the only difference it made was to push her fat up into her boobs temporarily.

Lol as a rational adult I don't believe it. I just wanted others opinions on this fad and why some are saying it works.

Lies, myths, fairytales. Corsets and similar waist trainers are stupid, and I'll tell you why: You go RIGHT back to the way you looked after you stop wearing it. It takes longer to revert with a steel boned corset than it does from a spandex shaper, but the end result is the same: when you stop wearing those things, you stop looking tummy-thin. So why wear an uncomfortable piece of clothing every day for results that don't last, when you could work out a couple times a week and eat within your calorie goals and get results that will last? What is the virtue of doing the waist training compared to that?
