How do you 'maintain' your database?

My question is about how you maintain your mfp personal lists of foods. I am finding it more and more difficult to find what I am looking for in my lists because of the tons of things I don't eat anymore but can't delete they just keep on showing up with I go to log. I tried following instructions for deleting things from my 'frequent' list but it really didn't help. Is there a way to just reset everything and remove all foods or would starting a new account be the only way?
