Any Vegans on Low carb diet? For Keto diet?

Hello,
So as the title suggests?
I'm not vegan per se because I drink milk sometimes and goat cheese but no meat/fish/eggs. So most veggies, legumes, lentils have high carbs and low protein ratio.
My weight loss is going perfect -no complaints but I'd like to try a low carb diet. (Apparently Ketosis causes and accelerates fat loss) ? Who wouldn't mind staying at the same weight but dropping fat lol -that's the dream lol
Also, I do not eat out at all-so if it's possible maybe home based suggestions?

OH man... vegan keto would be so very restrictive that I couldn't even begin to imagine. I wouldn't even know what to eat anymore.1

I know of one vegan who is doing keto. On the menu -- lots of coconut, avocado, tofu, and nuts.
It is not a very varied diet. Unless you were going keto in an attempt to control a medical condition, I'm not sure the trade-off would be worth it (but that's my impression).
reddit has a community (veganketo), not sure how active it is. Might be worth checking out as I don't think there is anybody attempting vegan keto in this community.0 -
Can you list enough low carbohydrate vegan protein sources to give you your daily protein without going over (say) 50g of carbs ? If not I don't see how you can do vegan keto.0

I can get 29grams of protein per 100grams of seitan (my own recipe) with around 10 carbs ... but that still doesn't leave much room for other things.0

I was curious and found this website (I don't know hardly anything about keto, there could be errors in it). I tried a few times to create a meal plan that had 25 grams of carbohydrates or less (what a calculator recommended for my weight and goals) with sufficient protein. I got close a couple of times, but it seems like it would be a ton of work (and probably not all that exciting).

It makes my head hurt just trying to come up with a satisfying and varied diet for a low carb vegan.0

Avocados, nuts, oils would be your main source of fat.
The protein sources listed on the above mentioned website, you would have to be careful with what brands you buy because some may have added carbs.
As for what you mentioned about ketosis burning fat and you remaining the same weight, that isn't essentially true. Ketosis switches you from using carbs as your primary source of energy to using fat as your primary source of energy.0 -
Yeah, I learned about Insulin spikes and then learned about good carbs and bad carbs.
Now I learned about ketosis. I wonder if there will be a time when "new research" will come out and say food is bad for us altogether and we should just get our energy from sun directly. I've seen people do that called "sun gazers" entire culture about it but they seem skinny and without any discernible muscles.
I also read on google- about being vegan and low carb diet -it'll be extremely hard. Lettuce, sprouts and so forth. It's possible but it won't be sustainable for me. Plus from my point of view it's no way of living.
I guess I'll leave ketosis for non-vegetarians0 -
Since things are going well now, why mess with it?0

I was going to suggest breathariansm, then I found out it's the same as sungazing
Seriously, no need to complicate more than necessary. I understand that it's exciting, but please don't tamper with what already works.
Seems you've reached a fine conclusion0 -
Maybe think about what you can add rather than what you can take away. Add in fats like nuts and seeds, avocados etc, as mentioned above. There are a lot of different nuts and seeds to choose from, so enjoy them all! Also, maybe focus on whole grains if you don't already - more fiber per unit serving = fuller, and watch the sugar. There are a ton of vegan desserts, cookies etc. out there now, but they have loads of sugar added.
I eat pretty much the same as you. I eat meat and cheese maybe every couple of months, eggs sometimes, but mostly plant-based. It's perfectly possible to play with the balance of fat to carbs, but to do full-out keto sounds like a challenge.0 -

LOL I keep reading new stuff then I get tempted to try it on myself because what's better than ourselves to see positive results on.
I don't doubt sun gazing at all but I'm not sure how long will it take me to start absorbing enough from the sun to fuel my deadlifts and squats loldopeysmelly wrote: »Maybe think about what you can add rather than what you can take away. Yeah that's what I've done for past couple of days. I didnt exactly change my fat/carb/protein ratios but for example today I'm under my caloric goal but my fats are 17 higher than goal and Carbs are much lower than my ratios. That's what I'll be trying to do now on, to just see how it goes.0 -
I've been vegan for 3 years(vegetarian for 10) and generally I don't have to worry about my weight because I bike 70+ miles a week and run. But sometimes, like coming out of winter, I managed to pack on 5-10 pounds of winter fluff from carbohydrate indulgences. I've found that going strict vegan keto for a few weeks then weaning off takes care of it. I don't think it's sustainable(if I did I would do it for longer). Anyway, I plan it the way the atkins diet does induction. Strict for 2 weeks, then I add in low sugar fruits, legumes, etc. It helps knock off those extra pounds for summer so I can see my abs again!
You can see my diary as I am back into strict keto right now. It takes a lot of meal planning but I don't feel hungry or deprived, I just don't have as much energy to run and bike until I start adding back in legumes and apples and stuff. I guess it's more of a detox for me once a year.1 -
