What should be my final weight goal?

I'm not exactly sure what my final weight should be? I started at 295. My last lowest on Sunday was 221. I am 5' 5" tall and a mana do 51 years old. I have always been kind of heavier muscled but chunky. I don't really understand all the lingo
that comes with defining your body. My goal is 200 but I think I will try to go lower but don't know where I should try to research a good weight for myself.

Hit 200 and see if you like it.

Ask your doctor! The BMI chart has your goal weight under 150, but that may be unrealistic for you.

    You might find this helpful.

It is a link to descriptions and pics of different body fat percentages for men. A goal body fat percentage vs. a goal weight accounts for having more muscle, so you might hit your goal body fat percentage at a higher weight than the standard BMI charts indicate.

Here is a link to a calculator to estimate you body fat with just a tape measure:

I agree with queenliz99. Aim for 200 and once you get there reassess.

    Talk to your doctor.

At 5'5, a Normal BMI is 112-149 lbs. Another metric that is easy to evaluate is waist size. You have a higher risk of health problems if your waist size is more than 94cm (37 inches) if you're a man (Source: http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/849.aspx?CategoryID=51)

My guess is that you will probably have to go below 200 to get under 37 inches for your waist.

What about going for a body fat percentage instead of a number on the scale? say 12%-16%

Very hard to say..I'm 5'2". started around 220lbs. I am constantly re-evaluating such as when I got under 200, then when I got under 180 then when I got to 150...I think your shape has a lot to do with it. For me, I'm VERY top heavy. I've lost 70lbs and my cup size hasn't changed, just my band width so being 108lbs going by this chart would never be a target for me.

I say attempt to get close to your "healthy range" then evaluate what looks and feels best on you.

For Women 25-59 years of age.

Height Small Frame Med.Frame Large Frame
    4'10" 102-111 109-121 118-131
    4'11" 103-113 111-123 120-134
    5'0" 104-115 113-126 122-137

    No one here does either.

I'd aim for 150 (top of the BMI normal), and as you get close you can reassess. You may stop at 160 if you are happy, you may continue down to 130, you won't know until you get there. BMI is a good starting metric for those that are out of shape, but as you get close to goal switching to BF% (use various estimates like skin fold, tape measure, how you look compared to photos of known BF%).

You can aim for 200lb if you want, but it will still be obese, and unless you are jacked up with huge bulging muscles it won't be a healthy weight for you either. You'll probably also find that you still want to lose weight to look better. To put it into perspective, I'm 5'11" and weighed ~180lb in that picture with an original goal of 175lb (and I thought that was a stretch). I'm now down to 170lb and I'm probably going to continue to slowly lose weight to 165lb before trying to put some of the weight back on. Basically, my idea of what I can get down to keeps dropping as I realize my BF% is higher than I want and I can continue to lose fat without losing muscle.

I don't think there's any easy answer for this. Mine would be to find a nice balance where you have a low health risk across most of these metrics:
Glucose, blood pressure, HDL "Good" cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Triglycerides, Waist circumference plus how you FEEL about your weight when you hit 200 pounds.

I know that even though I have a general target in mind for my weight in the end (150-170 pounds), it will be partially determined by whether I feel "fit" at that weight or not. I'm OK with being "heavier" if it's from muscle weight rather than being "skinny fat" just to hit a certain number on the scale.

You gain a huge health benefit when you lose 10% body weight. Reaching a "healthy" BMI may or may not be a great goal for any particular individual. I think the most important thing is can you maintain at the weight you reach. You can always get down to 200 maintain there and then reassess. My goal weight puts me at an overweight BMI- around 26. If I can maintain there for a while, I might go lower later....
