Overcoming emotional eating?

Hey guys, I'm ready to begin this crazy journey of leading a better and healthier lifestyle. I'm realizing more and more that my emotional connection to food is a huge hinderance. It's become so severe that I experience withdrawal-like symptoms when I don't eat sugar. What kind of mental preparation should I be thinking about? What steps can I take to correct this?
