Hiking in tights

...has anyone tried it? I have a friend who swears by spandex running tights for hiking. Apparently, the compression keeps your muscles from getting tired so fast.
I'd feel a little self-conscious, but I wear tights for biking so I'm sure I could get over it. But is there any actual advantage? It seems that the lack of pockets would be annoying, if nothing else.
We're going to attempt Lugnaquilla - the highest mountain in Co. Wicklow - this weekend, and I need new hiking trousers anyway, because the old ones are all too big. (Yay!)
Thoughts?

Hmmm, I suppose that's one solution, but it might look even sillier!0

I'm an avid hiker and I've never heard that before. Lots of hikers wear them to prevent chaffing and for whicking . . . It's good to dress in layers anyway!0
