Is there a way to turn them off so that each day doesn't show a long string of, "Usermame has logged in for 3 days now," etc.?

Thank you so much. My problem was that I didn't know those comments were called "news feeds." That bar across the top that said, "NEWS FEED," should have been a clue, but I thought that was something you clicked on if you wanted actual news, like Google News. Sigh. I'm learning.
