Hello I am a 6'4 145 pound basketball player , that is getting ready to play collegiate basketball. Now I am undersized and have been on a plan to gain weight by upping my calorie intake to about 4,000 calories per day. And my end goal is to gain 25 pounds in 8 months. Now I am lifting along with eating more but my question is this, should my goal be to acquire more mass or more muscle. And would be easier to gain 20 pounds of mass faster than 20 pounds of muscle.

Well considering you'd be hard pressed to gain more than 1.5 pounds of muscle a month compared to easily being able to gain 1 pound of mass a week, Id say the former.
