Protein is great for the body...takes more energy/metabolism for your body to tear down protein than carbs or fat, so don't worry so much about the calories....get the protein in. I prefer to do protein bars. quest bars are good with 20 grams of protein for about 170-200 calories per bar depending on what flavor you choose.

    Try a different protein powder?

There are different ones that are meant for bulking that have extra calories but just protein powder is one of the lowest calories options. Mine is about 120 calories per scoop for 24 g of protein.

Or is it what you are adding to the shake?

Turkey, fish, chicken, tuna, beans, lean meats, and yes, protein based meal replacement shakes. I can get about 30grams of protein for a 255 calorie hit by doing a shake.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about the calories in the protein shakes. Protein is important for retaining and building muscle. Just work the calories into your day. I normally start my day with a double protein shake with whole milk. 620 cals and 66 g protein. Looking at your diary, it seems you're protein drink is about 170, which, to be honest, isn't really a lot.

Having said that, chicken is a good source of protein, as is fish, beef, etc.

You're *optimal protein goal should be more than what MFP has set for you, it "should" be about 1 g per pound of Lean Body Mass.

Bottom line, look over your goals, and what you want to accomplish, read, read, and read some more...put in some time for research and find out what way best fits your goals. Some people think protein shakes are bad or bad for you, I personally think they're fine.

    *This is a common opinion

I use Cryosport Whey Protein from Costco which is 140 calories for 27g of protein.

For me protein is for muscle maintenance and healing and whole grains (complex carbs) are for energy. In the end though, it's about calorie control and daily caloric burn right.

My protein shake is 155 calories, 26 grams of protein. The powder itself only has about 50 grams of sodium, most others I have found are about 200 grams of sodium..which may not bother others, but my fingers seem a bit sensitive to too much sodium

I use proteins+ (by genuine health) and almond-coconut milk, and half a spoon of instant coffee.

I also like quest bars. High protein, high fiber, low carbs.

Chicken, turkey, salmon, tuna, beans, eggs, lean beef, etc.

I like to get about 130 grams of protein daily.

Protein shakes are a really good idea because they are extremely versatile. There are lots of different sources of protein that you can put into it to make it the amount of calories you need. I personally bought a 5 lb container of whey protein isolate in Dutch chocolate and I add a scoop of it (about 60 cals) to a cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk. It tastes just like chocolate milk, and if you add 2 scoops it's just like a chocolate shake. The thing I like about whey isolate powder is that you can mix it with anything or even use it in baking for the extra protein boost (25g per 2 scoops), but it's pretty low cal and it has low sugar and carbs and fats, so it leaves room to add those in later in different meals or tI the same shake if you so choose.

I'm also a big fan of Luna bars because they taste delicious, but have 9g of protein per bar for a pretty low calorie count (180) as far as protein bars go (some can be just as bad as candy bars).

I like to eat Greek yogurts, the dannon light and fit ones are good if you're l

I like to eat Greek yogurts, the dannon light and fit ones are good if you're looking for low cal; they taste good and are cheap. Sometimes I'll add pb2 to the vanilla ones and it tastes just like dessert without the calories to back it up.

Chicken and turkey are good; I like to put them in snack wraps with spinach, which also has protein, be it in small amounts.
