Likes not available

So I'm new to the community and am trying to be a supportive "friend" but regularly get an error that likes are unavailable. Is this a common issue, is there a likes-limited, is there something I've setup incorrectly?

    I don't know if this is deliberate on the part of MFP or if it is a bug, but there seems to be a 24 hour lag when you add a new pal. You can't "like" or comment via the newsfeed roll, but if you are on the web version, you can go directly to their profile page and like or comment on that page. After around 24 hours the problem is resolved and then you can like or comment directly from the newsfeed.

    Some are new friends(1-2 day friends)...well everyone is new since I've only been on the community page for less than a week.
